Dan was the ringleader of Hognet Packet Radio Network in Arkansas.  There was a system called Texnet which extended down into Texas with a 9600 baud backbone.  Dan and Chuck, KA5BML, led the way on that.  I can't even remember what time period that was, although I was VP of Hognet one year.  I think that must have been for political reasons, because I did packet, but certainly was not an expert.

DX'er Kevin Manzer, N4UFO, was also highly involved in the packet network, but I think that was a bit later.

Dan was one of the more active Technical Assistants when I was SM, and was one of those whose answers should be listened to and heeded.  He didn't brag, but he was highly proficient in most technical subjects. I didn't realize he was a DX chaser until recent years.  He was also a nice guy, treated everyone with respect, and did a lot of good for the hobby and for humanity.  He will surely be missed.

KA5BML ran one of the more active packet BBS systems in Arkansas.  He was a state trooper and worked the NW part of the state.  I think he retired when the tunnels went in.  He could occasionally be heard on 2M from his police cruiser going 100 MPH on the interstate.  It was a pretty quick trip from NW Arkansas to LR.  This isn't about Chuck, but Chuck and Dan were usually plotting and scheming together.  Chuck has been a silent key for awhile now.

Wow that's a horrible blow to the ham radio community!

I had a nice visit with Dan at one of the ADXA meetings and it was nice surprised to see him there. He looked good and was as sharp as ever.

The first time I met Dan was in Poteau Oklahoma. He was at the Cavanaugh Hill repeater site installing a packet Network. If I remember right that packet Network included all of Northwest Arkansas parts of Oklahoma and possibly even Texas?  He was a one-man machine installing and keeping that Network going. That was over three decades ago if I remember right. Hard to believe that we barely have an internet like we have it today. I used to listen to him every Sunday morning Talk technical stuff with another ham and Northwest Arkansas. It was on the 146.70 machine?

Just hard to believe it was that long ago and hard believe he is now gone! I was very blessed to know him.  Dan was a first class ham radio operator. Prayers to his family. 73 Jay..

Dan Puckett,  K5FXB, the heart and soul of ARCUA, passed away last evening around 8:30 pm at WRMC from multiple organ failure.  Dan was a committed amateur radio operator for more than half of a century, and we will always remember him as a friend to all of us.  Becky will plan a memorial service for a couple of weeks from now.  His body will be cremated through Moore’s Funeral Chapel.
