Yes, I got his career and Dickie’s mixed up.  Moritz was a cool guy - wish I had been able to know him longer.

There were so many others, so many stories….   some of which could actually be told!   I’m thinking about the group carrying the big 20M monobander down an LR street late at night because it seemed like the thing to do.  It worked OK on the deserted highway until some kind of major business had a shift change :)

Some of you may be tired of these old stories, but ADXA has a rich heritage of audacious midnight antenna-carryings and other hijinks.  Antennas and rotators were repaired at meetings at ADXA member homes on a “hold my beer” basis.    If the walls of the hospitality rooms at the early meetings could speak…..

Moritz lived  in west LR, high on the hill, overlooking the river …great location.  Amazingly, we was in the commercial HVAC business AS A DESIGNER AND ENGINEER!!!

That was probably either Dickie or Moritz Shollmeier, WA5EFL.  Moritz was also a prominent DX chaser in LR.   He was known for climbing his tower in the dark so his neighbors wouldn’t be upset.  Sadly, he died way too soon, in the 60’s or 70’s.

Moritz was a speaker at one of the first few ADXA meetings in LR.  He was another who had a very successful professional career in spite of blindness.  I don’t remember what it was, though - possibly insurance.

Back around 1964 or so I was visiting some hams in LR and being toured around to meet a few guys, and one of them was a blind ham working DX. So it must have been him. He may have been using an HT-37 but I'm not sure. But he was working England on SSB and I was highly impressed.

Everything interlocks and comes back.

In recent “chatter” on the reflector Dick Freeling, W5TIZ, was mentioned. Dickie was one of the original charter members of ADXA back in 1967. This morning Chaz Cone, W4GKF, was the “Featured Member” on QRZ.com. I don’t really know him but sometimes I click on the photo to see the person’s bio. I was surprised this morning to see he has Dickie featured on his page as the person who helped him get a license.

For those of you who never knew or met Dick, you can see a photo of him in his shack on Chaz’s page at https://www.qrz.com/db/W4GKF

Also, for those who do not know Dickie was blind. He was shot in the head by a sniper in WW2. He survived, but lost his eyesight.
