Well, guess I was a “late-comer” (WN5FMK Sept.’71 then WB5FMK in ‘72) but one of my memories of not only being a part of the Arkansas Teenage net with most of the folks previously mentioned, was the time I caught Rich Duncan, then WB5CNV (now WD5B) on 75 meters mobile coming down US 71 from the U of A on his way home for the weekend. So I proceeded to give him directions to our house, at which point my mom asked who I was inviting and what did I know about him. My simple answer was, “Well, he’s a ham so it’s gotta be OK!” So, Rich stopped by and I saw my first HF mobile setup and was thoroughly impressed that he could talk on a band from a car that would normally require over 115 feet of wire!StanGreat memories here, Dennis!
A month ago, February 1 to be exact, I had the extreme pleasure of presenting the program at the Bella Vista Radio Club. Before hand Don, K5DB and most of the ADXA NW Ark group met me and Kim for a bite to eat before the meeting. Don and I began recalling old callsigns and folks from “ back then”. Some DX’ers, some not.
A funny story about Dickie. He knew my mom as she would bring me to the old OZK picnic (The original Arkansas hamfest !!!!) before I was old enuf to drive. One morning I was lsning to 3948 before heading off to school and Dickie got fired up about something and during his rant said “hell”. Now, today that’s not looked upon as a bad word but then it was. She heard it and said “Who’s that doing all that cussing on the radio? I thought that wasn’t allowed?” I told her it was Dickie and she said she would have a talk with him at the next picnic. I don’t recall that she ever did as I became old enuf to drive and she didn’t have to chauffeur me anymore.
Anyway, one of MANY funny stories about Dickie.
