ADXA Folks,
Several weeks ago I was approached by some of our members active on the digital modes about creating an informal "Digital Focus Group" within ADXA. John & Brenda (N5ER & KC5CFE) came up to W5ZN just after the first of the year for a visit with me and Kim to discuss this and some other ADXA topics in general.
There is no question that the digital modes are wildly popular, more so today than CW or phone. That is quite evident within ADXA. HF activity, regardless of the mode, is good and healthy for not only ADXA, but amateur radio.
Now, it is also thorougly understood that digital modes are not everyone's "cup of tea". I understand that, because they're not my favorite or preferred mode however if a DXCC country comes on that I need, and it is only on a digital mode, I'm going to bulldoze right over you to work it (You have now been warned!!!) :-))
After discussion with the requesting parties and the ADXA Board, who unanimously endorse this, we will establish an ADXA Digital Focus Group. The following are the guidelines for it:
1. There is NO formal membership other than ADXA membership. There will be no "officers" or elected officials. It will function solely under and within ADXA.
2. The groups focus will be to educate and mentor ADXA members new to the many digital modes that continue to evolve technically and in popularity.
3. The group plans to meet at the conclusion of our quarterly meetings or via Zoom to specifically address questions our provide mentoring for a member who wants to become active on digital modes. This will allow our general meeting program and hospitality to focus on DX'ing in general and those who have zero interest in digital modes won't have to sit through a discussion they have no interest in or chose not to attend because of it.
I want to emphasize the ADXA Board believes this is a positive move. If you recall the last presentation during our annual meeting in December focused on FT8. It had a 30 minute time slot but went for one and a half hours, and could have gone on much longer if we didn't have to QRT the meeting.
Initially John, WB5BHS, will be the informal lead of this group. If you have thoughts and comments regarding the focus group and what you would like to see discussed, drop him a note. The group will provide a report during our quarterly meetings or more often as required. We will also rely on them to provide a program or two throughout the year and at our annual conference.
