Great memories, San!
I remember you and I comparing broadcast experiences when we first worked each other on AM W5KGJ and K5QHS – Stuttgart to Fort Smith – we were both just starting broadcast “careers”.
When I was working in radio in Fort Smith, a couple of us went to Tulsa and met Scooter Seagraves when he was the “Double SS mess” at KAKC😊.
I got to U of A and worked weekends at KHOG radio but ran out of money after a year and went back home and got back on KFSA radio while going to Jr. College. I was encouraged to audition for KFSA TV and became the youngest 10 pm anchor in the country (age
19) in what was a syndicated EXXON (then ESSO) news cast, the same in over 100 markets. It was an exciting year; I was actually on camera over 23 hours week with weather, sports and a daily interview show in addition to the 10 PM slot (once interviewed Robert
Reed of the Brady Bunch – his family owned a turkey farm in eastern Oklahoma and I heard he was shopping in downtown Ft. Smith so I called him and snared him for an interview) I gathered up enough money and a car to go back up the hill and back to a full
time job at KHOG until graduation. I got a job in Dallas with Procter & Gamble.
While there, I couldn’t stand just listening to fabulous radio in a major market, so I interviewed and got a weekend gig on a # 1 rated station in a top ten market - 50,000 watt
KLIF, the McClendon flagship station! What a blast…crashed the Beatles press conference when they came to US for the first time, met the Beach Boys, etc. Got promoted with P & G to Oklahoma City where I did a short weekend stint with WKY, #1 in that market
– Along the way, I have interviewed the Kingston Trio, Stan Kenton, the Four Freshmen and my very favorite interview, Glen Campbell! Fun, fun memories.

Pat:
I never had to audition except read a page or 2 when applying for the WQXI-AM in Atlanta when I was at Ga. Tech and after football season, since I was playing on the Freshman football team during the fall
and winter months..
The initial job I had as part-time in Stuttgart, again no interview talk since my close friend Scooter Segraves, the #1 announcer later in Tulsa for 30 years. He was in Stuttgart from about 56 to 61 and
heard my sorta low voice and liked it.
For free I worked some Saturdays in DeWitt, AR at KDEW which was owned by Ed Morry W5BDR, a close ham friend like Ross Beard W5FUW in Stuttgart, and I did this on my Saturdays off from my medical
practice job at the Stuttgart Medical Clinic in 1970-71. I have announced many football games in Paris and Springdale in the past, the station and school administrators, knowing my broadcasting history.
Chicago’s WLS, great days with some stories I can tell you about the WLS main owner and Scooter, who is about 83 years old and lives in Diamond City, AR, near the Missouri border. He also was a radio
announcer in Memphis and in southern Louisiana before going to Tulsa.
We can talk about those true old days perhaps at the next Q meeting of ADXA..

Thanks for sharing George. Happy Birthday and Wedding Anniversary to both of you.
Nice to have a smooth talking celebrity in our ranks. Still have any of your audition tapes San??
My favorite DJ from the early 60’s was Dick Biondi (spelling?) on WLS, 890AM, Chicago. He eventually got fired for inappropriate comments related to miniskirts.
