I used to do the same thing.  Reason it isn’t like it used to be:

1.  Incredible amount of RF interference.
2.  I think receivers were better then.
3.  FCC allowed lower power AM stations on clear channel freqs, more AM stations, etc.
4.  I used to be able to hear WABC from Orlando, WLS, CKLW and many others.  Not these days.

I have found a loop outside really helps AM reception.

If you listen around on AM broadcast today, either the receivers we have today or sorry or the stations just don't propagate as well as in the 60's.  Even with my outside wires today and a 7300 or 7610, they just don't "hear" as well as a 5 transistor, 9v radio did back in the day.  And our car AM radios, might as well not even be there.

My favorite DJ from the early 60’s was Dick Biondi (spelling?) on WLS, 890AM, Chicago.  He eventually got fired for inappropriate comments related to miniskirts.
