Yep Dennis .. Later the Navy confirmed it had not been above water in many years. It did not just show up for the MD and then sink when he left the DXpedition. HI  The ARRL and he made some “give and take” agreements years later on his trips to the Indian Ocean.

All the DXers at the California DX gatherings at Fresno and Visalia, even up to my last trip there a few years ago, stayed away from him. The crowds were very large at  his presentations but very quiet, no laughter at all.  Collins stories and I knew his roommate in the military who later lived in the Little Rock area. I am sure you remember some of the stories. HI  I have photos of me and “him” on my shack wall from my last NCDXC convention meetings. Yep, memories .. 😊

73 and good luck on remaining days of chasing D60AE.  Still need another RTTY QSO or two if he gets on other bands a bit more..

** Remember a certain MD who went somewhere later proven to be under very deep water all day and claimed he was “on” the island.. **  It counted for a while until the MD was proven to be a liar.

But I think he had a perfectly good explanation for that.  He said as they were sailing away, he looked back and saw the whole island slowly disappearing under the sea, never to be seen again.  Sounds legit :)  I guess he just made a lucky escape!
