The VK2 is VK9DX, who’s reasonably active and plans to be there for years.

Want to let the ADXA members know some history stuff, many might not remember who I will be speaking about, since info is decades old and a little bit is current.

Years ago in 1983I was asked to go to VK0 Heard Island by Jim Smith P29JS who had formed the Heard Island DX Association. I had already paid a “good $ amount” to Jim to help us get started with our boat charter search, etc. Then I  was asked to go into medical practice in Paris, AR in March 1983 and did so in June 1983, having to cancel out on our rare VK0 Heard Island trip. Turns out Jim had another group going there without his knowledge and they competed; Jim alone, and not making too many QSOs and in a poor location away from the other group on the island. Think it about broke his heart and all of the HIDXA funds were totally spent. I had recommended Jim for the DX Hall of Fame in the mid 1980s after I had surprisingly been elected in 1983. Jim got elected a couple of years later. He deserved it due to his Pacific area DXpedition involvements and extensive operating from P29JS.

A side note is Kirsti Smith, VK9NL, Jim’s wife who I met in person in Dayton years ago and again on my VK9 Norfolk Island DXpedition in 2013. We had lunch twice and I visited her home while there. We talked about the mid 1980s and her intense involvement with Jim’s efforts. Kirsti told me a couple of weeks ago she is not operating ham radio any more and has no interest in the future. All old equipment donated by many DXers decades ago is gone and much was non functional, having been donated in the early 1980s. She did mention a VK2 had moved to Norfolk and was on the air but on a limited basis. So, if you hear the VK2/ or whatever, you need to work him!

I love Norfolk Island and would love to go back to roam around. Great people, scenery and fantastic history of Captain Cook’s claiming the island centuries ago and then getting people sent to Pitcairn Island… another long story about that!!!

Decided to comment on the above and Norfolk Island, especially since hardly any DX spots or comments are being put on the ADXA site at this time.. Joel, thanks for your earlier comment about our radio sanctions, licensing and legal assignments and possible missions and ham radio being a “radio service” involvement. We should be proud of having to study and take pertinent tests to pass licensing procedures and then enjoy our involvement in this internationally recognized entity... It ain’t like fishing, golfing, hunting, horse racing and watching sports on TV.

San  K5YY    everyone have a good weekend of chasing DX.
