Thanks, Dave - that was my basic problem, that TQSL kept reminding me but then refusing to process the update.  When I went to the ARRL site for tips on “TQSL won’t update”, it had a lot of computer settings to check and implied that you couldn’t just download and install a new version.  Not knowing exactly how the certificates work, I was afraid to take that step until friends recommended it.   However, that appears to be the most common solution, rather than messing with Windows settings.  The only suggestion I might have is for them to show that as a possible solution to try before screwing around with all kinds of settings.  The only caveat is to make a backup first of your certificate and locations first, but that is easy.  Any idiot can do it (as evidenced by my success :).

I’m still not sure why TQSL refused to process any updates itself - maybe somehow the version had just gotten too old but it should be possible to change the error message to something sensible like “your version is too old - back up your certificate and settings and download a new version”.

Dennis,

Usually TQSL will prompt you if there is new version available; usually there is. I’ll ask Bob at HQ as a follow up on this just to close the loop. Looks like George and Dave got you lined out but I want to make sure we’re not having an issue.

Lotw problem solved - George Cotton and Dave Jacques suggested that I re-install TQSL from the web site and that worked.  I went into the old TQSL and made a backup of my certificates, QTH's, etc but it wasn't needed.

I think the problem is that Lotw has worked in the background so effortlessly I had no idea how to do things.  Once I set DXlab up to communicate with it, I just pushed a button or two and I was caught up.

Thanks for the help, George and Dave!

In past days, I had a serious question about Lotw about once every other year and Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, could answer it immediately off the top of his head.  Sadly, Norm has retired now.  I sent an e-mail on Friday to the lotw help desk and they will eventually get back to me, I’m sure, but there are a lot of smart people here….

My version of TQSL is 2.2.2, from 2016!  DXLab keeps reminding me that there is a new version available and I have tried to upgrade numerous times but TQSL flashes an error message too quick to capture and goes away.  On the Lotw site, there are some suggestions for solving this problem, but most of them are either over my head or I wasn’t in the mood to be an IT guy while reading them.   My version works fine but there are a couple of new settings I’d like to implement.

I don’t want to uninstall TQSL and reinstall because I’m not sure how my certificate would be handled.  I made a backup of something as suggested and it is on a thumb drive, but the certificate stuff has always been a mystery to me.

Any suggestions of things that might work.  I don’t really want to try 20 different computer settings and hope one of them works.  This couldn’t be that difficult!

Thanks, 73,
Dennis, W5RZ
