LOL! Your Dad was right! Yes Stan we have built several amplifiers in the 500 watt range. Lately we have gone to solid state construction. “Karen” was my first solid state amp. She is for 2 meters and at 375 watts out, she is 100% duty cycle for 5+ minutes. I liked it so much that I built a 160-6 amp using the same mrf300 devices. The HF amp is Jethrine.
I have just started my first legal limit amp ever. It will use a mrfx1k80 Ldmos. I expect it will take me a few months to finish. This will be Bertha. Here is a picture from yesterday test fitting the boards on the copper heat spreader.
I started attempting to build amps when I was a young teenager in the 70’s. I failed in my first couple of attempts, but eventually got a bit better. Building sure is fun, whether it is an antenna, amp or even a transceiver.

The worse the WX is the better the antenna works. At least that is what my dad told me 55 years ago.
Randy - If you are really building amplifiers we should talk. I have stuff.

Stan, I wouldn't have been wanting to be on a tower today here. Windy and cool, then came a big rain this afternoon. I sure need to get up my tower and do some very much need stuff. Glad you have a signal back on the air.

Today was too cold and windy to play golf (or waste oxygen as Joel would say). When I came back from ZF, only my shunt fed tower for 160 was working. No tribander, no 40m dipole, no rotator. I didn’t have anything for 80. Probably none of it worked when I left in October. I wanted to be able to get on a little and at least listen to the ZF station where W1DED is renting it for the week. He is the guy who interviews contesters - Q5 Ham Radio.
Anyway I went up to see if I could figure anything out. I didn’t see anything on the tribander and figured it must be a connection in my choke. Took it down , found the problem, fixed it and put it back up. Now I have an antenna that works on 20/15/10, fixed NE. The rotator needs to be replaced with a Yaesu one I have here and at the same time lower the mast and hopefully just have to do the same thing on the rotatable dipole. You can’t reach it from the top of the tower.
If you are waiting for that new band counter to pop up, give ZF2KT a few contacts over the weekend.
73..Stan, K5GO
