Chuck I was a chief engineer on inland riverboats for over 20 years, port engineer for 2. I simply ran the fuel consumption math, the other costs I might get them in the ballpark so I didn’t go there, but my last firm costs insights fuel was about 50% of the day to day costs of operating a boat kind of like that, I don’t know how much crew is on it nor do I have a clue as to their wages? The company needs a profit as well as a maintenance per hour accrual which they built into the charter.
For the crew this is a very serious undertaking, at Bouvet they are on their own, there is no close repair facilities, no one to call for quick help. Per that mind set the company will have a very seasoned captain as well as engineering. So those will be premium wages paid.
From looking at the boat guest accommodations our operators will be well cared for on the boat, even a hot tub! Let’s hope nothing bends or breaks for the duration!

Charles,
I don’t find this type of information boring at all. It gives us some insight on the “nuts & bolts” of the expedition. Especially on the financial side.
Sounds like you have a background in the merchant marine service???

I guess we are all excited the Bouvet event is getting closer, the M/V Argus is in Cape Town undoubtedly fueling, taking fresh stores, getting the helicopter and crew aboard as well as the dxpedition crew and equipment onboard and stowed!
One of the major expenses of this dxpedition is the charter of the M/V Argus , this vessel is owned by IceTugs out of Greenland , one of the larger expenses of operating this vesssl is fuel, they spent 15 days from shipyard in I think Spain to Cape Town, this is a 3500 hp vessel, in the marine world you figure 1 gallon of diesel fuel per hp day, meaning the boat burns approx 3500 gallons of fuel per day or 52,000 gallons of fuel to reach Cape Town, since the boat is undoubtedly burning bunker fuel reduce those numbers by 10%. And #6 will cost 30% less then mdo. So fuel only costs to get to Cape Town is about 90k .
I’ve lost about 99% of y’all’s interest now so I will get off my soap box.
Waiting to catch um on the air!
