I was starting to think I was going to miss Micronesia (V6D) with just
three days left. I don’t usually miss large-scale operations that I’m
after, but I’d yet to hear them louder than S-1 and many calls on 20, 15
and 40 went unheard. VOACAP indicated that 40 might be my best bet, but the
best time would be between 4:00 AM and 7:00 AM local time. I did wake up at
4:00 but couldn't quite get out of bed.
I got up at 5:45, fed the cat and let her out, then headed downstairs. The
DX Heat spots showed no 40-meter spots and pretty much no CW spots at all.
But I decided to check RBN and it showed a spot on 10.105 MHz only one
minute old. Sure enough, there was V6D calling CQ and not getting much
action. And it was the strongest I’ve heard them yet. I didn’t look at the
S-meter, but he was maybe S-3 and solid copy. But did I have an antenna
that works on 30? I don’t think the 88-footer with Matchbox likes 30. I
wasn't sure about my formerly 134’ EFHW, now of an unknown length after a
big windstorm modified it. But I switched to it and pushed the ATU button.
Tried a couple of calls 2 up with no luck and moved down in small steps
until I heard “WA5BDU”. Success! Within a few minutes, I saw that I was in
the log.
First new one in a long time!

Nick, WA5BDU
