By all means I am not a powerline noise expert, and have those issues here, but just for general information the Quansheng uv-k5 for less than $30 on Amazon can be flashed with different firmware and will then do modes AM and USB as well as FM.
I have done 3 of these with the egzumer firmware. I have 2 loaned out, and traded the 3rd for some tower pieces. I did have one that would not flash, and sent it back to Amazon for a replacement with no problems.
Good luck with the noise issues.

Congratulations on earning your official fox hunting reward Jay. You’re doing great up there! A BIG part of DXing is to either be very, very lucky, live where there are no overhead power mains, or have/ make a friend or two who works at the utility company.
I live right in the middle of the area where there was a voltage upgrade about 28 years ago. Unfortunately, they left several poles still framed at 7.2 Kv instead of the stepped up 14.4 specifications and they sized the lighting arrestors within 400 volts of the nominal operating voltage causing conductions. It’s caused unbelievable issues for radio, so I’ve learned a lot of tricks of the trade trying to work around it, then later finding and fixing it after I became an employee 18 years ago.

Hi Pat,
Yea Kathy has sort of fizzled out,....for now anyway! My fault, as I have waited too long putting up a gain antenna again. She still is Zooming away on CW with her CWops and LICW CW buds!
Kathy's rig is powerline compromised! That is a Yaesu FTDX-10, but every knobbed rig we have owned has the same problem dealing with high levels of power line noise. In the last two months, I've been able to finally interface with the power company (long story). I have become their birddog at pointing at which poles have problems. After 6 years, I am now batting 100% on which poles are bad. Six to eight poles all had bad lightning arrestors or loose hardware. One of the poles will be replaced soon, but they fixed the hardware on it for the time being.
Thanks to Mark K5OO I have become a mini powerline noise expert. Something I really didn't want to become! Anyway, thank you Mark, for all your help on educating me!! That has taken about two months of time and I am sure I can find more, but that is hard since I don't have access to private land. So far, the power company has fixed everything out to a mile! The main culprits were .3 miles away from me and one was looking down at my back yard. After I call in the pole numbers in, they will call me before the dispatch and after the problem is fixed. This is very important to know that I am not sending them off a wild goose chase! K5VR Stan loaned me his portable AM VHF receiver that has helped me from wearing a heavy Icom 705 all the time. Small things that make a huge difference! Thanks again Mark and Stan
Now we are dealing with storm damage and Kathy is my ramrod, hi.
Trying hard to get the 6m beam back up in the air. Also to get a HEX beam that will be my backup antenna. Then hope to get some aluminum back up later this year. With Adrian going back to Bouvet, I want a few backups ready, if possible.
Sucks getting old! 73 de w5jay/jay..

Jay, W5JAY, has provided updated DXCC Standings information. He added two new ones to his Phone and CW totals. That brings his Phone total up to 300 and his CW total up to 315. Jay’s been hanging out on 6M and has added five new ones of the Magic Band to raise his total to 89. His Desoto Challenge total is now 2302.
Great progress Jay but it does raise a question. Have you been hogging the Radio? We want to see a report from Kathy!
73,
Pat, W5VY
