I had the unique pleasure of having Joe as my QSL manager for many
years starting in 1970 when I was EP2DX. I visited Joe along with his
wife Ester and sons Joe Jr. and Paul a number of times over the years
at their various homes in PA. Joe had a phenomenal memory for
QSLs and how he managed all those calls over the years I have no
idea. A couple of memories stick out - at one house they had a
basement which was Joe's "Shack." When you went down there the
entire basement had tables filled with thousands of cards to be answered.
He knew all the "piles" and would answer those when he got the logs
from the DX operator. And you had to realize Joe had a full-time job
with Sunoco Oil Company and raising a family. All those hours of
sorting and answering cards - Wow!
Another time I went with Joe down to the local P.O. for him to pick up
his mail from P.O. Box 73. I was surprised when he actually opened
up a box - something like 230 - he had a deal with the postmaster that
his mail would be sorted as if he had box 73! I often wondered if the
guy who had box 73 ever got his mail hi.
Everyone who had the chance to meet Joe would come away
knowing that they had met a true gentleman and super nice ham.
RIP, Buddy... Rick AI5P
