Last year, I operated the 160 CW contest doing all the functions by hand. I was busier than a 3 legged dog scratching fleas. After 6 hours I was exhausted and had a tremendous headache. I think W5ZN, and maybe some others suggested N1MM software, and this year it made things so much easier. While not as efficient with it as I need to be, it is a powerful tool.
While tuning through the many stations working the contest, around 1835.48 I suddenly ran into a monster pileup. While the cw speeds were much too fast for me to copy, I finally broke out my phone, and made a slow motion video. Slow motion video slowed the speed down to a paltry 30-35wpm and it was then I realized that it was K5UR. I was not able to break through the pileup with my paltry 3 pint amp, and so missed my shot at AR. Fortunately I was able to pick up N5EE for AR a little later and slower.
What I discovered is N1MM has many little things that help. For example if I entered the exchange M0 instead of MO, N1MM would lay down on the job and refuse to do what I asked it to do. Once I figured out that beating on it with the nearest heavy object did not work and merely changing the 0 to a O would work, we were all good.
I also found out that the more "pints" you have to run, the better, a cw filter is your very best friend, and that I am incapable of running an online pileup.
Overall it was fun. the score was low, and the practice was good. I ran 5 hours and 20 minutes in 2 operating sessions, but due to an emergency was called away for other duties.
I would have really liked to work K5UR, Does anyone have his cell number so I can text him "pse QRS", and if I did text him this, would he know what QRS means? ; ).
Everyone have a great day.
