The January 2009 ice storm left us without power for 25 days, had an 8kw Briggs gen set, a wood fired water heating furnace. The only time the Gen was off was to refuel it, about 10 gals a day. We are now better Generator equipped, 17 kw diesel powered gen set, 40 gal tank which we have used on field day and short power outages. You have to be careful with the today’s gen sets..their output is pretty nasty. The inverter gen sets are great. One item in a lot of homes that is sensitive to the cheap gen sets nasty output are the mini split ac heat pumps and some of the central heat cool systems using the inverter control compressors like the mini splits. Our diesel Genset is 40 year old technology, found one of the old Delco Gen’s, bolted it to a Detroit 2-53, yup kinda noisy , heavy…But clean power! A bit more rain up here in the hills @ 30 deg …well I test ran Bertha this afternoon! Stay warm .

Get two Honda inverter generators. 2K. Propane adapter. Run it off the tank connected to your grill or whatever. We do that in C6 when the power goes out which is often. Runs the lights, a window unit and the fridge.

Hi Roger,
Did you say that you have 3 x 20 gallon tanks? This is propane? I have 250 gallon propane tank that we occasionally use for heating. Perhaps I could hook up a generator to it as well.
I don't actually need power for the house - just the shack :-) So, a smaller generator would probably do.
