Actually Lanny, dad was the "2nd generation". I got into the hobby first in '69 when I was 13. Then, when dad saw how much fun I was having, the bug bit him as well. It only took about 6 months for that to happen, hi hi. I started with a DX-40 and an HQ-110 that the folks helped me purchase (along with working on the farm), with a homebrew dipoles for 80 and 15 meters strung between our huge maple trees in the back yard, but after dad (WB5ANK...SK now of course) acquired his General license, in about a year and a half we had a complete Drake 4 line station (T-4XB, R-4B, L-4B, MN-2000 tuner) feeding a Mosley TA-33 up 110 feet with an inverted vee for 160-10. We had a lot of fun for about 6 years before I left the nest and went off to college..........the good ol' days, hi hi.

We both worked a lot of DX in those days, no 30-17-12 meters, of course.

After I passed my General code and theory, I was also active on the Arkansas Razorback Net and the Arkansas Teenage Net on 3.995 (in those days). It was on those nets that I met another teenager who has remained a dear friend all these decades, Stan-K5VR, when he lived in Alma and I was in Green Forest. There was quite a # of us teenagers and young adults on 75-meters in those days and we were all good friends. Sadly, many of them are now SKs.

Don, K5DB, has provided updated DXCC Standings information. Don just had a LOTW submission verified and has picked up six ATNOs to raise his Mixed Total to 321. His CW and Digital standings are now over 250. Don also added 86 band counters to push his Desoto Challenge total to 1589. He is also closing in on 8BWAS needing only NM and SD on 12M.

Don's goal is to hit the 2000 mark on the Desoto Challenge in short order. He also mentioned that he is making plans for a 160M vertical for the winter. Last time he was on 160 was as a teenager with his Dad back in the 70s.

Very nice progress Don.

73,

Pat, W5VY
