Greetings ADXA Folks,
As I type this, it is 9:30 AM Monday morning in Arkansas and 7:30 PM Monday
evening in the United Arab Emirates. The International Telecommunications
Union's (ITU) World Radiocommunication's Conference (WRC) that occurs every
four years is taking place Dubai. While some believe the FCC has authority
to allocate the radio spectrum among the many users (cellular, wifi, TV,
broadcast, Land Mobile, satellite, etc) that is simply not the case. The ITU
does this and has the authority to do so on a global basis and take the
radio spectrum like a deck of cards, shuffle it up, and deal it out as it
see's fit with the concurrence of the governments around the world. The
Amateur Radio Service is but one fish in a very large pond of big sharks
with a heck of a lot of money vying for the limited availability of the
radio spectrum! I am here as part of the International Amateur Radio Union
(IARU) delegation. The IARU is an international organization made up of
national amateur radio societies. ARRL is a member society along with RSGB
in the UK, JARL in Japan, and many others. The IARU is a sector member of
the ITU but only as an observer. Authority to vote on specific spectrum
allocation matters is reserved for "member states", the governments of the
various countries of which the USA is one. I have been ask to present a
program on the IARU and how spectrum is allocated at a future ADXA meeting
and I will be pleased to do so, but for now this is not the focus of this
email.
I'm sitting here this evening reflecting on the amazing DX excitement we,
the ADXA folks, have experienced the past six weeks. Not only did we have an
outstanding DX conference in Russellville with one of the premier
DXpeditioners of our time, we have experienced an explosion of DXpeditions
unlike we have seen since before the Covid lockdown of 2020 and, in fact,
further beyond that due to the low sunspot cycle activity.
If you're an old dog DX'er, you know these are good times. If you're new to
DX'ing PAY ATTENTION!!!! These are the best of current times during the past
11 years so take advantage of it. We have impressing the importance of
getting your station ready, and Dennis W5RZ has greatly encouraged us with
his personal BIC challenge (even providing us an exclusive and private, to
ADXA members only, photo of "the chair"). HEY!! Dennis is an old dog DX'er,
TOP OF THE HONOR ROLL!!!, yet he discovered a challenge that prompted him to
"GET IN THERE AND WORK 'EM". Some of you (maybe most? sorry Dennis!) are a
lot younger than Dennis so if he can get in there and out pace us that's a
very strong message!!!!
November and the amazing DX we've experienced is taking a brief break. Get
ready, it WILL start up again very soon after the first of the year so if
you have identified any station or antenna items to address DO IT NOW!!!!
GET READY! Its about to start again.
When I was driving Adrian and Mio back to the airport Sunday following our
conference we were discussing K5FUV's presentation on the top most needed
and achieving DXCC Honor Roll. Adrian told me at that time there were two
DXpeditions in the works to TOP 10 locations. He did not want to tell me
where, deferring to afford the team leader the opportunity to make the
public announcement by the end of the year. I respected that and we have now
seen the big announcement about a return to Bouvet and also to Peter 1 !!!!
Fortunately I do not need Peter 1 on any HF band but still need Bouvet on
160. I WILL BE READY !!!
I'll be back this coming weekend with what we are expecting to be no
spectrum allocation impact on the Amateur Radio Service. My station is ready
to go for round 2. Is yours?? If not, "get busy living or get busy dying!".
For me, well, you know what I'm going to do:
GET IN THERE AND WORK 'EM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
