[ADXA] Darleen Magen ( and Vince and Dave Bell )...

Vince Thompson VT stayed with me during that Annual Banquet since we lived there in LR until late 1983. I stayed with him twice on my way thru Los Angeles to go on 2 Pacific DXpeditions in 1980 and 1983. Great host to me…
Dave Bell, W6AQ, stayed with me once and attended one of our ADXA banquets. I stayed with him in CA when I gave a talk there one year for a quarterly DX meeting of their club, AND he paid for my airline ticket! .. Nice of his club to do that.

Darleen wrote a book after her husband died and after she went SOLO on a few DX trips. She met JY1 as I did, but lucky for her, she stayed with him for 2-3 days I think, and I was there only one night.. DXpeditioning got in her system, and she was a good and fast operator. Next time I visit my son’s family there I will go by to see her. Lot of memories stimulated from my real old days of DXpeditions!! She lives just off the southern bypass in Hot Springs, near my son’s lake house.

Dennis, TU again for reminding us of Darleen.. Great ham memories for sure! A few of us are DXers from long ago and remember her DXpeditions to some extent.

I met them at the ADXA Annual Banquet in Little Rock.   Vince Thompson, K5VT, was the Guest Speaker.   He talked about the Video he made for the ARRL.   His presentation was about him meeting King Hussein, JY1 and filming him for the ARRL's Promo Video.

Back to Darleene and her husband.   They were telling me of how they met in South America at an Airport.   They met each other in passing going to their respective departure flights..   They looked back at each other and it was love at first sight.   I told her that night that she needed to write that down.   Darleene said that she had.   They wrote a book and it was for sale in the Mid-America Museum in Hot Springs.

Thanks for bringing back fond memories of ADXA in the early years.

That’s great, San.  Yes, that call is familiar so maybe i’ll remember her husband’s name and call now.  Apparently he died of a heart attack while they were operating from Tonga in 1970.

I remember Darleen. I lived and practiced in Hot Springs for years and Darleen lived near ML Young QKR.. I saw her quite often in the old days. Wonder how she is doing? She did put out a book about their travels. Nice couple but forgot when her husband died but was years ago..  Any info on Darleen’s situation and activity. May be in a nursing home…
TU for the memory, Dennis.

Does anyone remember Darleen Magen?   She and her husband traveled the world and operated from several places.   I think he died in the 70’s.  Apparently Darleen still lives in Hot Springs.  She commented on a post about the A35GC operation because they had operated from Tonga.  i believe she wrote a book about their DXPeditions and I remember seeing a copy at the Mid America Museum.
