Subject: [ADXA] Roger, G3SXW

A few reflections on my good friend Roger Western, G3SXW, who
became a SK on April 24th.  I first met Roger in Tehran, Iran, in 1970 or 71 where I was stationed and he had been posted as a pharmaceutical rep. He later was licensed there as EP2IA.

I had the pleasure of meeting him over the ensuing years either at Dayton or visiting him in London. Many of the ADXA members will remember him as a first-class CW op, contester, DXpeditioner,  or the leader or co-leader of the Voodoo Contest Group that specialized in operating for about 20 years in various African countries.

Roger was severely injured after falling off his roof while cleaning the
gutters around 2 1/2 years ago.This led to a number of serious medical issues and stays either in the hospital or in a nursing home. He had
another fall in March and his condition rapidly deteriorated leading to
his passing. His funeral service is scheduled for May 23rd.

You could literally spend hours with Roger discussing contesting,
DXing, travel, and life in general. He was also a very entertaining writer
having published a number of small books - which I highly encourage
you to read if you have the opportunity to find them. The titles include:
Up Two - Adventures of a DXpedition; Contesting in Africa, Multi-Multi
on the Equator; Micro-DXpedtioning Uncovered; DX Delights, Tales
of Travels with my Radio; and Escape from Revolution (about leaving Iran in 1979).

I last saw Roger in Picadilly Circus, London, in October, 2016,
where he kindly lent me 200 pounds so I could get back to
the U.S. without a problem! But that's a story for another day hi.
