[ADXA] Not DX, but interesting experience

We give remote VE tests and it is often interesting. Today, we had a college student from California. The team leader sends the applicant an e-mail when it is time to get on the Zoom meeting. He did that and a minute or so later, we see her running outside with her phone. She said she got confused between our time and CA time and had to find a suitable place to take the test. We only had one on the list, so we told her to take her time. She found a quiet spot with a table behind a building and set up her laptop. The wi-fi signal wasn’t too good, so she switched over to the hot spot on her phone. I was hoping the reliability and battery life on her hot spot was better than mine.

She said she had planned to eat lunch and get in some last minute study and was obviously very nervous. She passed, though. Someone suggested that she could go eat lunch now, and might enjoy a beer with it. “I’d love that if I was old enough for it to be legal”, she said.

I thought the remote VE sessions might be iffy, but the security measures are very good and the VE’s probably pay more attention to watching the candidate than they sometimes do in an in-person session. We are doing W5YI now and we are about to start doing ARRL remote sessions.
