We might have to recalibrate that down about 10 WPM. I downloaded good ole
RUFZ just now and saw that I could catch a few call signs at 50+. But
that's a lot easier than copying whole sentences.
I always enjoyed those CW copying contests too. Once at the Little Rock
hamfest I entered and Dennis did not, which cleared the way for me to win a
cool Kent paddle that I still cherish.
I think maybe, as J. said, Dennis and I may have gone head to head once and
tied, if that's even possible? But then later we had a 'grudge match'.
Boy, I went in like sheep to the slaughter on that one. Dennis had this MFJ
CW workout machine wired directly into his brain and it turned him into a
cyber CW copying machine that could beat the skimmer. I didn't even get out
of the chute. I'm up for a rematch but give me about five years to practice.
Trying to increase your speed is fun and you learn some stuff about your
inherent limitations. The OTs used to always say that you must learn to
copy behind if you're going to get fast. But my short term memory buffer
doesn't work that way. I can't be typing what I heard several seconds ago
while continuing to add the text that's coming in right now. I have to stay
near real-time.
Of course, head copy and just taking notes is so much easier than
writing/typing everything, as you're just trying to get the jist. I can
probably do that at 35 to 40, but I wonder if I could even do the required
one minute of perfect copy at 20 WPM as I once did for the Extra?
Keep slapping those paddles!
