[ADXA] ARRL Life Membership

In my second time as Section Manager, I had a budget. I wasn’t sure what to do with it, because I sure wasn’t going to claim mileage for going to hamfests and club meetings. I guess I bought a few stamps because we still occasionally mailed stuff back then. The main thing I remember was that I could get ARRL Handbooks for $6.00 each out of my budget. I’d take them to hamfests and meetings and give them away to new hams, new ARRL members, renewing ARRL members, etc. I had a lot of fun with them. I don’t know what giving away 40 or 50 Handbooks over 2 years did for ARRL’s bottom line but it made a lot of people happy.

The XYL’s been a good sport despite the shack being in the master bedroom and guy wires across our living room window’s beautiful view of Mt. Ascutney (VT) 1975-1992!

>> Joel, I’ve got you beat by a couple of years. When I was 17 or 18 years old, my mother asked me if I’d like an ARRL Handbook for my birthday. I had a fairly recent one, so I told her I’d rather have the first installment payment on my ARRL Life membership. I think it was $14 or so, paid quarterly for two years. Almost 60 years later, I can see that was a good move!

If you don't expect to live another 25 years then you won't realize a "benefit", so to speak, other than an offset of any future dues increase however on the other hand if you don't expect to make it another 25 years you can consider it a could contribution to "the cause" (but its not tax deductible!).
