Greetings to all ADXA folks!
Labor Day is officially behind us so that usually signals the start of
the 2021-2022 contest and DX season. It is so very great to see that
summer has not deterred many of you from jumping in those pileups
throughout the summer and posting spots and reports here on our
reflector. In addition, all of the updates ADXA VP W5VY has been making
to the ADXA Standings is evidence many of you have added new ones!!!!
This is the time of year that I really start focusing on radio for the
coming winter months and begin finalizing my winter low band and contest
plans. That is now in full swing at W5ZN. I have three antenna projects
working. The first, that is in progress, is to take down my 160 meter
transmit antenna and install base insulators. This is something I have
wanted to do for some time rather than shunt feed the tower. Nothing
wrong with the shunt feed, I just prefer the insulated base route. My
son and son-in-law assisted me in taking the tower down a couple of
weeks ago. The base insulators are installed and the tower is on its way
back up with new Phyllistran guys instead of the insulated steel guys
that were previously used. The second project is to move two JK
tribanders over to the tower where the other tribander is so they are
all stacked together. That will be a more involved project with N5QS,
N5QT, KB5RFF and AC5AV assisting. I also have a new phased 160 meter RX
antenna to add to the arsenal that K5GO and I have been working on. I'm
looking forward to giving it a test drive this winter. Stan is
installing one at his ZF9CW QTH on Cayman Brac as well.
What is your fall antenna or shack project??? It is time to get it
completed!!!
We are planning an in-person ADXA meeting this fall. Not a big
conference, just a simple meeting. We should have the date finalized in
a week or so. The location will most likely be in Russellville in order
to provide convenience for all of our members. Stay tuned for the
specific details. Of course, this is contingent on the Covid situation.
I know there will be some who chose not to attend and that is completely
understood. I do believe, however, that it is time to move on for those
who prefer to do so.
Last month I attended the Huntsville hamfest. I have to tell you it was
really great to be there and to especially see a large enthusiastic
crowd. K5UR and K5UZ were there. I didn't see any other ADXA or Arkansas
hams but I just may have missed them. The Northern Alabama DX
Association held their customary banquet on Saturday evening. Adrian
KO8SCA was the speaker and gave an excellent presentation on his trip to
A5 Bhutan. I know all of you have worked Adrian either from his callsign
or on a DXpedition! He is also one of the main players that facilitated
getting 4U1UN back on the air and is the operator for most of the ops
from there recently. You may be wondering about his callsign since it is
a little unique. Adrian is from Romania and still holds his Romanian
license and callsign YO8SCA. So it made sense for him to pick up KO8SCA
as a vanity callsign for his US license!
Later this month is the W4DXCC DX Convention in Pigeon Forge, TN. I know
K5UZ plans to be there and hopefully other ADXA folks. I'm looking
forward to the event.
ADXA Sec/Treas and Newsletter Editor Glenn, N5RN, will be soliciting
input for our ADXA 3rd Quarter Newsletter in a day or two. Please
consider sending something in....anything that you have done either
operating, something with your station or DX items of interest.
Thanks to each of you for your support of ADXA, especially over the past
18 months.
73 Joel W5ZN
ADXA President
