WOW – Joel, I did not realize that site was not working but when I heard about the CX, I went here:

http://www.classicexchange.org/announcments/Winter_2021_CX_Rules.pdf

This is fairly comprehensive. I just wish there had been more activity. I will try the NRR in the next few days and try to get all of my boat anchors crankin’!

Hi Bill,

The ARRL news story reference below is from 2009. It contains a link to the Classic Exchange Group but that is a broken link and says the page is no longer available. Do you have a current link you can pass on?

Great to see these emails with all of the boat anchors – I HAVE TOO MANY OF THEM but I LOVE 'EM!

I glad to hear about this event. The reason I set up the "Rigs for Classic Exchange" in my garage a couple of weeks ago was to complement the "Boat Anchor Corner" in the shack and on my QRZ page, plus (not pictured) my Johnson Ranger and Drake 2B/2BQ (five rigs) to participate in the CX.

I was all set to enjoy this event which was the first weekend of this month – for those not aware of this fun event, the objective is to get old rigs on the air and "Qualify" them by making 3 QSO's with each set up. I was ready to go but only qualified two rigs, the Drake C-line and Ranger/2B – there simply was not enough activity. So, I will try to get as many as I can on NRR and use one of my old bugs or sideswipe with one. TKS for letting us all know about it, Joel! C U in the event – mostly 80 or 40 for me; might even try top band in early evening.

I really enjoy that as well Nick, hearing what others are running for rigs.

I worked a W7 in Arizona last night on 40 meters, in the old novice band, that was running 2 watts with an HW8. I was a bit surprised. He was the weakest station on that band at the time, obviously, but a very clear Q5 and solid copy. I gave him a 559.

This is a fun event because it drags out over a couple weeks. I just try to work maybe one station every day to put something in the log.

I usually would go to my HT-40 and Drake 2B but this year to keep it simple I dragged out my HW-8. Even with VFO control, it qualifies. Even though I've been fooling with QRP for 20+ years I'm still amazed I can work people with its 1.5 watts out.

There's no requirement to use a mechanical key but in the areas around 7.055 and 7.110 to 7.125 it sounds like the old novice bands with all those straight keys and bugs. This J-38 is killing my arm, BTW.

The big pay off for me is seeing what kinds of rigs the other stations are using. My four QSOs thus far have netted:

DX-40 & Drake 2B
Viking Adventurer
Homebrew, 5 watt
DX-40 & NC-270

How many of you remember ARRL's Novice Roundup contest?? This was an annual contest held in February aimed at Novices with the objective to provide an avenue for them to improve their code proficiency and pick up some new states. It originally ran for two weeks covering three weekends with a maximum of 40 hours operating time. Beginning with the 1972 event it was shortened to nine days and covered two weekends with a maximum operating time of 30 hours.

There is an annual event that began a few years ago to commemorate the original Novice license and equipment from that era called "Novice Rig Roundup". Details are at:

NOVICE RIG ROUNDUP<http://novicerigroundup.org/>

Dennis, W5RZ and I have membership numbers. There are no dues. Those of you who were here for our September 2019 meeting saw my original Novice rig, a Heath DX-60B transmitter and HR-10B receiver. Those have now been relocated to the operating desk so I can press them in to service occasionally. During my Novice days having your transmitter crystal controlled was mandatory. The HG-10B VFO I have is the original VFO I purchased once I upgraded to General.

If you were first licensed as a Novice, particularly during the highpoint in the Novice era in the 60's and early 70's check out the above link if for no other reason than to reminisce!
