Check out my review in the August 2017 issue of QST. I have since put it on a guyed tower, and have some extra hints for how to do that.

Hi Scott,

I know you like to homebrew and DIY, but if one is putting the pencil to the paper, it’s pretty hard to beat a KIO or NN4RR Beam.  I am sure there are m any more  that are good.   Some folks will build up one for a couple of bands and then expand.  It can be a bit of a rabbit hole to go down if one is homebrewing, but a ton of fun at the same time!

You might ask Ron K5XK, if he has one laying around?  I think he had one new in the box before his move?  I am not sure, but worth an email or post on the BVRC site.

Thank you, Jay. I had found the k4kio in a roundabout way from:

http://www.hex-beam.com/

I am working on going through his tutorial. Pretty interesting and fun project. But the readymade components would be nice.

Hi Scott,

At one time KIO also had a very nice web site.  He got into building these HEX beams only after helping many build their own.  In fact, the later HEX beams have a U reflector if I remember right instead of an W.  I forget the reason, but think it provided wider bandwidth.  The old Traffie Design HEX beams were called narrowband and HEX beams like KIO were call broadband design.

Heck I just found the link, read all about it, hi.  https://www.k4kio.com/history-of-the-hexbeam/  Everything you wanted to know, including rolling your own.  Light weight, can turn with small rotor, and install on roof tower or even a nice pole!  If you can get it up to 30 feet or higher.  It will open up a new world for you.

There is so many web sites about the HEX beam.  Here is another one.  https://k4hex.com/

What is cool about some of these manufacturers is that they now have all wire elements pre-made so it is pretty much plug-n-play.   Many YouTube videos on building them as well.

As they say your mileage will vary.  It is after all just a 2 element beam.  In the beginning some thought it was a quad like antenna and had magical qualities, but it is not.  The HEX is just a 2 element wire beam that is bent so it works good while taking up less room.  Plus the lower band, 20m is up on the highest part of the spreaders.  Again a nice plus as the top element does stop where you mount the antenna.

There are a couple of bands that can interfere with other bands to a slight degree.  Again if memory serves me they are 12m and 6m.  I forget the reason.  Maybe 12m is too close to 10m and so on.

Good luck and happy fishing, hi.  73 de jay..

Hi Scott,

Trent asked me to email you... I just recently put together a Hex Beam, and lovin the performance, and it is only about 6 feet up temporarily until Spring... Look into https://www.k4kio.com/ that is where I got my from, you can also just get parts if you just going to build one. Very easy to put together, it took me about 2 hours to get it done, that included an Union beer break...

Let me know if you need more details,

Hey, Jay. That's great!

Haven't seen a lot of calls from Kosovo, so it was an ATNO for me. Thankful for the Germans :-). Just the one call on 40m for me also.

Trying to finish up 10m on Five Band WAS (13 left). Also Triple Play--about twenty left to go--mostly CW. Still need AK and HI on SSB. And still need CQ zones 22, 23, and 26 for WAZ. Waiting for the next sun spots. LOL

After these I can relax, right?

Thinking about trying to build a homebrew hex beam.

HI  Scott,

Today I got the confirmation on 40m.  A new band for me, but not ATNO.

Nice to get these unexpected.

What band/bands did you work them on?
