Got phone call from friend in FL who is in charge of preventing hackers from getting into your email lists and resending spam to each one of them. He works with 6-7 hospitals in the south FL area.
(1) Do NOT use “CC” to send an email copy to many people with just the one TO person at top. Use BCC of your list you want to get a copy of an email intended for the person or two at the top under TO”.
(2) The TO line can have 1-2 email addresses if you like but never put several email addresses on the TO line. That is what BCC and CC are for, but unfortunately the CC addresses are private to many of us who use that email address for other entities, organizations, web sites, etc..
(3) Use BCC out of respect for the privacy of others.
Jay W5JAY has a good system where the from and to are his call at both places. The “to” has HIDDEN email addresses of many hams but nobody sees them. Same as a list of several guys on a BCC list.. Just forget using CC as much as possible unless you have a small list (hackers LOVE getting into a CC list of dozens of valid individual emails!) If you get into a situation like this, have your email REMOVED from the CC list of the person who sent the email. Have them put your email address under BCC only. That is a valid request based on what’s going on recently by hackers wanting you to click on an attachment. DO NOT CLICK the attachment! Re-email the sending person at a known valid address if you are unsure, and ask if he sent an email with attachment to you and others.
Sorry about this information taking time to read, but just wanted all of us to be aware of hackers our there looking for large CC lists anywhere, ham sites or otherwise. They increased 300% in 2020!
Stay safe during the worsening times. They say we are in for a worse hit this summer than last. Hope not… 73
