[ADXA] First new DXCC of 2021

HI Steve,

I have mentioned this before.  Both K5JUC and I have DXCC on 160m (not a big deal compared to the Central AR Big Guns, hi).  We both were on a smaller than average city size lots in Fort Smith.  It can be done.  It didn’t take Jimmy long to get it done.  However I got distracted and it took about 10 years to finish it off.  

The bad thing was back in that time period we lived within a few blocks of each other and QRM was an issue on both ends.  The receiver technology wasn’t as great as it is now back in the mid to late 90s.    

I would love to get back on 160m and see if I could add to my total some day soon.  

Your ground system must be working.  BTW, both Jimmy K5JUC and I were using the same antenna.  Loaded half sloppers at about 50 feet.  They were POC for the most part, but we both got by.  I am sure you will do great with your MA-160.

I'm on a small city lot.  Absolutely no room for a traditional 160 rig.  I was able to put down a nice radial field in the back yard for my Cushcraft 80/40 vertical.  I take it down in the summer and there is no evidence it was there.  I have resonant dipoles on both 40 and 80.  I did some research and the Cushcraft MA-160 vertical uses the same base dimensions as the 80/40.  I was thinking about that and then saw an MA-160 for sale, used, and bought it.  I put it up on the base section of the 40/80, same part #.  I have made some contacts on CW, about 25 countries on FT8.  It doesn't hear very well but I can seem to work whatever I hear.  So, I'm having fun with it while its cold.  Will come down in summer as it requires three guys that will get in the way of my wife when she is cutting the grass.  :))))))  I was surprised it would do the job it did.  It wouldn't be much fun though without FT8.  Honestly, this antenna gets pretty good reviews.  I don't think I wasted my money.

Seems like it's easier to work DX on 160 than on 80. No doubt because there are DX contests dedicated to 160 but not 80.  Somebody fix that!  Not that I'm a threat on either band.

Madeira Island, Jose (CT3MD) made his appearance on 80m FT8 in a short burst Tuesday evening (local).  He was -20 and actually gave me a -20 as well. After seeing his RR73, I saw him no more, but noticed others were still calling and a few appeared to still be able to work him.  

I now have Jose on 10m (2013 SSB), 12m (2014 SSB), 15m (2012 SSB), 17m, 20m, 30m, 40m & 80m are all in the last 3 years and on FT8.  

My Challenge points are now up to a whopping 1162 with this addition.  A very long way to go to the 3000 benchmarks set by Rick and Joel.  In checking my LoTW stats, in 2020, I got 23 new ones and in 2019, the biggest count of all with 35.  But this is where it drops off, mostly because I didn't have a very good antenna for 80m with only 9 in 2017 and 2018 combined.  The next ONE was back in 2007 from the USA.  A 10 year gap between the first one and the more recent ones.  Looks like I slacked off in 2020.  Gotta work on that.  

At two a month (typically), I won't reach that level for 76 more years or until 2097.  Don't think any of us will be around then to celebrate.  However, 1500 is only a slightly more reachable target in just 18 years, I'll just be 91 then.   Of course some very good band conditions in the next few years will help out greatly.
