Malabytes is a known problem for many programs. Outlook is also a problem. I tried Malabytes once, took it off and scoured my computer afterward. Gave up on free antivirus long ago, and Windows Defender had a problem for 12 years that they just discovered and patched in the last month or so.
I wish for no internet and the rebirth of the Apple II and DOS.

I am not into the various issues of FT8 and WSJT-X etc, so fortunately I am not going crazy along those lines. I would go crazy every few months on FT8 changes and downloading of software updates. IIWII But I and others not on FT8/FT4, etc DO HAVE the following issues I am sure.
When Windows 10 changes every few months recently, my entire screen of 35 icons disappears, there are advertising logos or 4-5 Windows “special squares” on my opening screen page and the Start button on lower left is completely changed as so what I see… usually a long list of items listed from A to Z. It does allow one to go back to Classic Windows start format or even a Windows 7 simple format but takes time to “redo things”... yet again! You are forced to use Windows 10 and its continuing crazy “updates” that Microsoft feels are needed. BS. 90% of people are fed up. ☹
Windows 7 is no longer supported by malware programs like Webroot, which I mainly use, or the inept free lifetime Malwarebytes I have as a “sidekick” of sorts. My Win 7 laptop I use in special occasions when my desktop PC is being “fixed” by my computer expert. I am not protected but can get into my Cox.net email accounts quickly and sign off. Takes my expert 2-3 hours to get rid of some W10 programming software updates and reinstall the simpler versions. Meanwhile my Computer documents, photos, PDF saved files etc sometimes are completely missing, and I rely on one icon I call my “favorite”, which has about 30 icons in it, to assist me. Also, back photos or docs are in a LONG list under some W 10 hidden system.
Sometimes my one seldom used Hotmail.com email account, which “flows over” to a Microsoft Outlook.com association, wants me to change my PC check-ins and synced to Outlook.com ONLY. I have to get my PC expert to fix things and allow me to check in “locally” and NOT through Microsoft Outlook.com. Anyway, it is a CONSTANT issue of changing by W10 gurus for some reason, and I am tired of it. Maybe Apple is a way to go. I do update my backups on an external data library which my PC guy uses to reinstall my computer items. Thank God for backups…
Now I am hearing that almost ALL Windows 10 laptops being sold new everywhere are infected by a manufacturing hacker malware “built in”, which with just a few select few letters/numbers programmed in can be recalled by someone in Nigeria, China, Russia or Jamaica etc for each new laptop PC sold. We are in a software war which is destructive, negating the need for a nuclear war per se. Who knows what will be here in another 10 years!! ☹ .. We need alien help ASAP to rid us of hackers and companies who collect data on ALL of us in the world; the USA is behind on blocking the Russian business and government hackers especially.
Sorry to take up space but my letter size has to be a”16” or I have trouble reading at my age! So a 16 might help the old ADXA guys who can NOT read an “8-11” print size.. 😊
73 all and be safe. I fear for those who live in the Little Rock area and their worsening of cold wx.

This is a source of constant frustration with me. I've been working with Windows since it first came out. I"m also well versed in a number of larger computers, including mainframes, from a hardware, operating system, programming language and application software level. Frankly, I'm something of an expert in technology. But I am having a dickens of a time maintaining a stable WSJT-X environment. Each time I get it like I want it, and begin successfully using it, either Windows or WSJT-X wants to do an upgrade.
I moved my business and personal computing to Apple about 8 years ago, and have zero regrets over that. Much more stable, easier to manage, and I can focus on my business not my technology.
I'm thinking about building a good Unix box to run my ham applications on, and moving away from Windows for good.
Let me be clear - I don't think that I have nothing to learn. I would love for someone to explain to me what I'm doing wrong in Windows, because I have two perfectly good laptops I'd love to deploy for my radio hobby.
Just my two cents.

Steve I wonder about this all the time. Over the years I have never had a Windows update screw anything up here which would be catastrophic in many ways. Virtual serial ports, virtual audio ports, etc for the SDR rig. I used the Icom transceiver for mission-critical dxing.
I am running Windows 10 Pro. I wonder if the pro is less intrusive?
I have seen virus protection like Avast remove and quarantine files like the Icom codec over and over again unless you provide a definition that the program is okay. I just saw this the other day with the Icom USB driver at friend's house. It was very aggressive.

So my Windows 10 machine updated, Dell. After it was over, my CODECS
were gone. I questioned this on WSJT and was told yes, that a Windows
update wipes out my devices. So, do I have to go back to the Kenwood
page and download the drivers for my 890 and 590 again? And do I
understand this correctly that everytime Windows 10 updates, my programs
are trashed? That is what I'm hearing on the WSJT reflector. Is this
anyone else's experience.
