I was a big 6m Grid chaser until the last few years. 1987 and 1994 were good years for me working the “boaters” to the west of Florida or barely on Florida land.
1994 = EL82 CM3ZD, EL83 CO2OJ, EL84 and EL 85 N1KTM/mm
1987 = EL86 W3ZR, EL87 WD4MGB, EL 88 WB4OOJ, EL89 WA4VSI
Those were in the months of May and June but EL89 was in August.
Lucky to work N1KTM/mm couple of other places, including EL67, UT1FG/mm in EL64 in 2007. Great to be on the “lookout” and chasing on 6 and 2 in those days a few cycles ago and some openings were very short.
Miss those golden days of my 6/2/432 and 222mc days. Congrats to you ADXA members who help keep the chase going on the VHF bands… I would monitor the ON4KST VHF Chat site all during the daytime hours. That helped the chase for sure!

That's the one I was referring to, George ... more like 8 years versus 10, LOL. If you google K4N EL84, there are some good pix of their trip.

I was a lucky one. Back in 2013 I worked K4N (EL84) on USB. At that time he told me they were on a boat amongst the coral outcroppings and such. Got the QSL card a year or so later. Beautiful location.

Hi EJ,
The problem with EL84, you need a boat, LOL. It starts 15 miles or so, WEST of Key West. And much of the small land area on those small keys is restricted.
One big DXpedition almost 10 years back, out on an excursion-type boast with tables, kitchen, etc for 3 days .... got EL84 for almost everybody. Great operation. I missed a M/S contact by just a sequence before they broke off for an EME sched. Then I had to head out of town for the remainder of the expedition. Such is life. No regrets.
Hopefully someone will head that way this summer. Luckily, it is perfect Es distance to us in NWA. And actually a good M/S distance, if the other end has a half decent antenna.

Congrats Steve. Heard you on 6 this summer a lot. Have to start listening 6 again now that we are approaching winter E season.
Which of the keys are in EL 84? I’ve got family down in Florida and we vacation in the keys from time to time. I agree with Pat about conflicts with family (and illness) recently messing with DX time. Also we need cycle 25 to wake up!

Steve, W5KI, has provided updated DXCC Standings info. He has been trying to wrangle his QSLs and LOTW Credits to get everything up to current status. He thinks he’s getting close to capturing everything. Steve has completed DXCC on 160M, 30M, 17M and 6M which when added to 5Band DXCC gives him 9 Band DXCC now! Steve is pounding away on 12M trying to catch the last seven he needs there for DXCC. His Desoto Challenge total is over 1400 hundred now…getting close to the 1500 medallion. For those of you chasing FFMA Steve is a 487 or 488 grids confirmed. He has found a spot on the side of his hill to place a 6M yagi that will have a decent take off toward EL84 down by the Florida Keys. If you want to rent a boat and haul a 6M rig out to EL84 he will probably help with the gas money!
It was great to see everyone at the meeting in Russellville. Thanks to Russellville locals who set up the meting spot. It worked out well. I was about 20 minutes enroute from Hot Springs when my “Engine Oil Level” warning light came on. I did a 180 and headed back home to switch vehicles. Turns out it was a bad sensor…not a bad oil pump or leak.
A comment on Joel’s note on lack of chatter on the reflector. I think there is a lot of built up demand for family get togethers. I’ve been working hard on my “honey do” list for a couple of weeks. Lots of family showing up here over the next couple of weeks. But, just take a break and work some DX!

Pat, W5VY
