[ADXA] HK0/HK3X 12M FT8

Preach it, brother Harrison! Yes, it is meaningless. I run my bandwidth at <>3 Khz but there is a local who does about 90% FT8 and he runs his at normal SSB bandwidth, probably 2.1 Khz. There are a lot of signals in that whole Khz he is missing and he probably gives better signal reports than I do because of his narrower bandwidth. Some people have a high external noise level, too, and that has an influence. I got very good S/N readings when playing with a magnetic loop. It was a very inefficient antenna and was many db down from any real antenna, but FT8 received signal reports were fantastic!

It is a signal to noise ratio however it takes in to account the signal compared to the noise of the entire bandwidth your radio is set to plus all of the other signals in that bandwidth.

The next time you see a signal that is -15 to -20 dB, reduce your bandwidth to 500 Hz or so and center it on the station you are copying. For example, if the station has a DF of 1250 Hz, reduce the filter bandwidth and then center it at 1250 Hz and see what happens!!! That "dB" number will jump up to 0 or plus something. Its simple math and the reason we reduce our filter bandwidths on CW.

Two of them are joining ADXA.....another PLUS!!!! They're consumed with HF and DX'ing now.
