I believe you know you're not alone in that position, Bill. 

I was involved in a discussion a few weeks ago, don't recall the
specifics but those who do believe it is based on the occupied bandwidth
of a USB signal, which is the basic mode used for FT8 but as well all
know voice is not the modulation scheme since each of the digital
signals occupies a 50 Hz bandwidth and the modulation scheme is not
voice!
