As most of you know, John (WB5BHS) is in Conway and uses a combination of
antenna, none of which would be classified as a multi-element beam. Most
of all his "marbles in a blender" tuner he uses. Have you ever heard him
change bands and that monster tune up? You will never forget the sound.
Yes, I'm shaming you John to get off CW and FT8 for a few minutes and
looking into fixing the tuner. Jab inserted. Don't make me twist it. So
how is that John's setup is so much more successful than mine?
I (WB5JJJ), on the other hand, have a 5 element m2 antenna at 35' in
Russellville and a 7 element Mosley at 30'. So how does 50 miles and
antennae make a difference? It's hard to explain. Yes, sometimes good and
other times not so good for each of us. This is something that all of us
have found somewhat difficult to explain, in layman's terms, to a new ham
that's just frustrated to wits end with his setup. Then after a picture
tour of Joel's world class antenna farm, it's easier for them to
understand. But it doesn't mean they like their own situation any better.
They just want more.
Now here are some interesting facts. Many times on 6m and other bands,
John with his "measly" antennae runs rings around me and my beams and
multiple EFHW's, more often than not. Then moments later, the tables are
flipped and I can work that DXCC with a single response to his CQ. While
John has been calling that station for "hours" on end, to no avail.
However, he beats the crap out of me on 160m. I'll hear 3 or 4 more or
less local stations while he's logging DX left and right that I don't hear
at all.
We are usually talking on HamShack Hotline during these encounters and
really enjoy ribbing each other until the other gets the connection where
one of us turns on the other to get a bit more serious.
Keep reminding everybody, myself included, that this is a HOBBY.
