[ADXA] FT8....

Hi Dave and San,

If I remember right the audio codec comes with the USB driver for the 7600. Been too long to remember how I had my 7700 hooked up as I was also doing FSK keying when I had that rig.

Yep I’ve been bugging San for a while now on this at various meetings like the OWS. He has a Brain Trust right in his back yard to help if needed. Guys like K5FUV, K5XH, K5DB, and K5YH are all on FT4/FT8. All it takes it asking for help. No many do this all by themselves.

Really in some ways WSJT-X simpler program, IMHO than doing RTTY or contesting with RTTY. San has all the stuff to get it done, but the layout may not be great right now for adding a computer near his radio, but very doable. I think in the Icom’s USB document is spec around 13-15 feet for USB cable? Anyway all San would have to do it add one of those monitor arm stand mount that clips to the back of the desk and he is set. They are cheap on Amazon. Plus you can get a refurbished Dell for around $300 or less. I bet he has an old computer laying around as well that could be put into service. Then if he wanted to could add a huge monitor for older eyes or even a pair of them.

But it wouldn’t end here and I am sure the older guys just like to coast a bit when there is nothing to prove 😊. Then we could do auto logging, LOTW, add more programs like JTAlert, etc. You know make the station into a DXing machine providing there is propagation. So once you go down the rabbit hole there is no end to this, much like jumping off and doing RTTY for the first time.

It is all about fun. I am too darn scatter brain to try and log all this manually. I would screw up so much the band, mode, entity, etc.

If the DXers in Fort Smith (We lovingly call them Old Farts) can do it with their 7600s I am sure San could if he wanted to. None of this is learned in a afternoon, but is well worth the effort in the long run, IMHO.

In a way it is a shame you didn’t get RTTY DXCC before it became just Digital DXCC, but it is still a dam nice award that includes all digital modes! BTW, I think my RTTY DXCC was signed by our number 1 ADXA honcho, Mr. Joel. Not all of the digital modes are like FT modes so it is a good award, IMO.

Even today on 12 meters I wasn’t printing them, but thought I could hear the growl of the VP Fox. Today my noise floor was like Joel’s is with his receive antennas. I have never seen it this low at this QTH and thought there could be an antenna problem. They came up for just a few minutes and then done. I thought dam get on 10 or 15m. Again if you think this is only computers talking to computers, guess again, there is an operator involved big time. While I was in the chase on 12m, I noticed others like ZM Earl was in there as well. It is so fun to see others in our group on at the same time!

Speaking of today I think there was a propagation mode that we lucked out in. I’ve notice 10m opening up and just to the north of VP8. Sporadic E cloud and over the equator?

Congrats to Joel on not only getting WAZ on 160m, but also at the top the heap on the Challenge. Hey I think I will live long enough to break 2K and then I am done, poke a fork in it, hi.

San,

If you have the Icom remote software you won’t even need an interface. I’m running WSJT (FT-8,4) through the LAN on a 7700 and a 7851. The 7600 mirrors the 7700 and should have the same ability. I do like how the Icoms run RTTY and PSK directly from the radio. True plug and play. You can do the similar with FT-8/4 via the LAN port.

I can send you the settings if you want to give it a whirl.

Well the software is free and don’t know what your RTYY setup is but you may already be “setup” for FT8 !!

Think I will wait til I am 80 years old to see if I have the extra money to spend on the hobby and all the peripherals for FT8 hooking up to my PC software which is 10-20 feet from my equipment. I see where Rick UR has worked the VP8 on FT8 and also FT8 on a couple of DXpeds recently, so at least he finally “gave in”….

And, my eyesight is so bad now that I am afraid I would misread my call being confirmed .. On CW and SSB and RTTY I know for sure because I can hear CW and Voice and my RTTY printout is large and I can read the page. Oh well, another low band/mode count for me standing at 11 now. 21 CW and 24 would pacify me along with a lucky 3.5 CW QSO. I would yell loud again and wife would come running into the ham room from across the house. 😊 I will wait for the new FT9-MS-1 mode coming out in a few months.

Think lot of this discusson on what , who and where came from the early 28mc spot by WD9Q about 28180 FT being LP and not PJ… that was about 90 minutes ago. He did not mention other frequencies lower down initially, only 28180 on 10m..

Does not affect me, since I am not an FT8 guy…. I have the VP8 on 28 and 24 mc from years ago but still would be nice to work them on THIS trip on top two bands.. Won’t happen for me. Anyway was just trying to tell Dave to check his QSO stream. Frequencies were not mentioned, only the band in the initial comments.. Lot going on now with the VP8 and confusing in some cases.

FT-8 At -12 to -16. Now they just switched to FT-4 . A bunch of LU’s and a couple of ZS6’s are -10 to -15 on 10m. You can hear their “whistle” so be watching for a CW opening... They are audible.

Phone or CW?? I hear nothing… perhaps you used the ‘sub audible’ mode of FT8 land? I never heard them on 24 SSB or CW yet, much less 28mc, shown to be mainly at 19-2000Z… No color on my VOACAP chart for 28mc. At least got em on 21 RTTY.
