Hi Joel,
I think CQ has and had big time money troubles over the years.
I went after my WAZ award after seeing K5JUC's award certificate on the wall. Even just the basic WAZ is no easy feat, IMHO. If you can manage 5BWAZ you are the man!
I sent the my WAZ application to the CQ awards manager at the time with an addition donation for his hard work. Well after a year of no certificate, I did an inquiry as to what is going on. Turns out the WAZ awards manager did their part (like within a month), but the certificates are printed at the CQ publishing house. I sent a few follow up emails and two phone calls as to what is up? More promises like it will go out in next weeks mail, more fake news. I followed up with CQ publishing stating this was no way to do business. They replied they had to spend the money on paying employees and getting CQ magazine out to paid subscribers first before anything else. My response I had already paid for my certificate a more than a year ago!
What a shame! I made one last reply to them. Stating this is probably going to hurt their bottom line in the long run as I was considering a 3 year subscription to their magazine. I would get these offers nearly every month in the mail. I eventually did get the 3 year sub, but I just noticed they miss their Christmas issue this year by over a month. I would not want to be in their shoes explaining why those full page ads didn't come out in time for the holidays. Plus, I love their editorials telling others how to run things or how they could do better, organizations like the ARRL. When I read things like that I think to myself, maybe you ought to focus on your own business first before criticizing others.
The finally insult to all the above, my Certificate did finally come in the mail. POSTAGE due, 14 cents! I had to get in the truck to go down to pay my postage due that was marked on the cardboard tube. When I got home an unrolled it, the medallion sticker fell off. I just stuck it back on and put in back in the tube. I still have it>>>>somewhere, but that is probably my last WAZ attempt.
I am sure that will change if I ever get near 5BWAZ award, hi. 😊

Subject: [ADXA] Worked All Zones Award
As avid DX'ers we tend to focus on DXCC. It is the premier award in DX.
As some (most?) of you are aware CQ Magazine sponsors the "Worked All Zones" (WAZ) award for completing contacts with all 40 CQ zones around the world. A key element to this award currently is you can apply for it with contacts confirmed through LoTW. Now, you still have to submit a small fee to CQ for processing however you do not have to submit cards to CQ for contacts you have confirmed on LoTW and you can apply right on ARRL's LoTW website.
I had never taken interest in a WAZ award even though they have a very attractive certificate. I finally became compelled to apply for a 160 meter WAZ award a year ago, in January 2019, through LoTW. The process was flawless. The only negative about the award is it took a little over one year, 13 months to be exact, to receive my certificate! CQ explained the delay was due to the renewed popularity of the WAZ award now that radio amateurs can apply through LoTW. The delay is not good but the popularity of DX and DX awards is encouraging.
So, if you're interested in some very nice "wall paper" for the shack and to further your status among DX'ers worldwide, check out CQ Magazine's WAZ award!
