My interest was perked up a bit on the N and S Cook Islands discussion, suffixes etc.
Initially known as plain Cook Island, my #241 was worked on October 30, 1968 on SSB. The card came direct to me with a Cook Island Stamp on the hand written card. The call was ZK1AA and showed guys in boats ( no S in suffix ). Then my “new one” #300 was Mahahiki on Sept 15, 1970 on SSB also. Call was ZK1MA ( no N in the suffix). Manahiki was later known as Northern Cook because it was in the northern islands of the Cook Island group and met DXCC criteria of mileage separation for a “new one”. So, seems like the PTT had no reason to show the difference in a special suffix letter or number after ZK.. The op told you if north on Manahiki (or Penrhyn Island) or Rarotonga in the southern group. Not sure exactly when an E prefix came into being.. It was well after I got the initial ZK confirmations. Fun hobby for sure, figuring stuff like this out. Thank God I got ‘em in 1968 and 1970!! That was a good, long 50+ years ago!!!

Never has been a callsign distinction between North and South. Just had to work 'em and get the card, or ask the op.

Thanks Rick.
Confusing to say the least BUT emphasizes the point of "listen listen listen" and do NOT simply rely on a cluster spot to know!

Perhaps things have changed in recent years, but I've worked both islands with no specific designation in suffix. I've worked North Cook with various first letters after the number that did not start with "N" and the same for South Cook that did not start with "S." For example, I worked South Cook with an N after the number, E51NOU. Granted, that goes back over a few years, so things may have changed.

Steve N4JQQ and I were having an email exchange today about North Cook and South Cook Island's both now having the same prefix E5. You old dogs will recall they have been different throughout history, and even more so before they were call "Cook" Islands.
So, the question was how do you tell the difference between the two based on the callsign since two separate DXCC entities have the same callsign prefix. Somehow in my mind I though the North Cook stations would be something like E51Nxx and South Cook would be E51Sxx or something like that but I can't find anything to support that wild theory that exists in my head.
Can someone enlighten me? Bill Kennamer, being our DXCC resident expert historian can you set me straight?
Thanks
