Those old calls stir up memories. W5MJO, Wright, was the manager of the Post Office Net and participated in the other phone nets. W5OBD (Old Brown Dog) moved here from up north somewhere, and traded in his W9 call. He was a regular participant in the Razorback Net (which I was manger of in 1965-66). WA5PPD (Pistol Packing Daddy), Ray, managed the Razorback Net for awhile. He moved in from another state and only was around for a few years. WA5KEF, Ted, was active on the phone nets, and I believe he always checked in on AM. He had an arm missing and his qSL card had a picture of an arm labeled “one gone”. K5AJM, Woody, was another one fortunate to have Collins equipment. I remember DTR’s CW signal with the KWM-2. I had the impression that Collins thought that now there were compact SSB transceivers, no one would care about CW, so they injected an audio tone to get CW and it sounded horrible. W5RIT (Dick??) was from NW Arkansas and was on OZK. K5TYW (John) also held the call W5BED and had a strong signal on OZK. He was a DX chaser. He used a bug and stretched out the T in his call. Of course, WA5BQI is our own Ron, K5XK. I think W5ELF and W5CFA were CW ops but don’t remember them all that well. Don’t forget WA5KUD, who goes by W5KI now. Also Bill, WA5AVO, who was an especially good friend, Gene, WA5IZR (now WI7N) , and many others! K5QHS (now K5YY) was often heard on the Razorback Net.
Not strictly DX related, but several ADXA members were in the crowd - K5UR, K5YY, W5RZ, W5ZN, W5VY, W5KI, K5XK, and others, I’m sure.
On a different note, I just ordered an LNR Precision MTR4B v.2 - that should put me in the Big Gun category!

Dennis

My parents sold it while I was in the Navy and some stuff got lost in the clear out....some logbooks, QSLs and things like OZK newsletters. OZK was a busy net back in the late 60's. Lots of radiograms from military folks telling their family they had arrived safely somewhere in SE Asia. Curtis called QZK pretty regularly. I was looking through a log from '66 where he had called OZK and sent me to RN5. Then he called the early session of RN5. Busy fellow.

>> I learned this morning that Curtis Williams, W5DTR, became a silent key on December 12th. Curtis was Section Communications Manager (today's Section Manager) for AR in the 1960's. He was very active on the traffic nets...Razorback Net and OZK CW net. Curtis was very enthusiastic about amateur radio and went out of his way to help new hams get off to a good start. When I met Curtis he was an Engineer for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Little Rock. He stopped by my old homeplace near Perryville, AR on his way home from a business meeting. I was 16 and a new General Class at the time. I was interested in engineering and Curtis gave me a tour of the SWBT Engr. Dept at 900 W. Capitol in Little Rock. He had transferred to St. Louis before I went to work as an Engineering Assistant in that building in 1973. Curtis had been a member of the St. Clair, IL, ARC since 1978 and served as president, VP, VE Team, and on the repeater committee. He was active in ARES/RACES and a volunteer fireman. First licensed at age 13, Curtis had been a ham for 65 years. Some you "real" OTs may remember where Curtis grew up? May he RIP.
