Astounded  by Clara’s  cool and calm demeanor working those stations quickly and not showing any indication of being a short time ham or confused on what to say. Oozes confidence and being only 16 surprised me for sure. Now show her how to do split frequency and how to work some DX! 😊

Thought you all might get a kick out of one our new hams from Fayetteville.  She and her dad both passed their Tech exams recently, and are working on the General.

She, her dad (KI5FPD), and her uncle (K5VCA, he’s a General and all 3 are new members of BVRC) were in the shack last Sunday afternoon and operated in the SSB Rookie Roundup, using our club call W5YO, with myself as the control operator.

This was only the 2nd time Clara has been in front of an HF mic, but she took to it like a duck to water, hi hi.  They were over a few weeks ago as well and operated a little bit in the WPX SSB contest.  Clara picked-out those DX calls like she’d been operating for 10 years that day, and she was ecstatic about working 10 different countries.

She is 16 years of age, and is not only working on her General, but has also enrolled in the Long Island CW class and is studying the code.

I haven’t had such a pleasure in a long time, of sitting on the love seat here in the shack and watching a teen get as excited about the hobby as she has.
