I noticed that in Rob’s article he used wire mesh, not chicken wire. That has a lot more material than say chicken wire and is better for the base current. Both types are made and can be purchased from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I notice they also have galvanized coating and other in stainless steel. If you do a Google on copper wire mesh, that is available as well.
I have seen copper mesh used in broadcast facilities before. That what I would aim for if possible?
So in the end I would use copper over stainless steel, stainless steel over galvanized. YMMV.

Don’t know but I have the entire set on CD and can print it off for you. I also have the entire ham radio series also.

Thanks! Was trying to pull the QST articles off the website. Can I get articles that far back on website?

The article I was referring to yesterday was "ground screen- an alternative to a buried radial system" by Rob Sherwood, ham radio magazine, May, 1977, page 22.
Other worthwhile articles are "Optimum Ground Systems for Vertical Antennas" by John Stanley, QST, December, 1976 Pg 13 and "Improving Earth-Ground Characteristics" by Roger Hostenbach, QST, December, 1976, pg 16.
Of course, for 80 meters, the guys with the big bucks should pop for a three element Yagi at 150. Works much better for transmit and receive than any phased vertical system/receive antenna system, and probably cheaper if you already have the tower.

HI EJ,
Very nice to see you yesterday!
I know this was aimed at Joel, but I wanted to weight in as well. First off what is the chicken wire's outside coating?
Although I have never used chicken wire, I thought I would pass along my experience with galvanized wire that was given to me. I have seen chicken wire at the local stores that is coated with galvanize. I forget the amount of galvanized wire, but it was given to me and the guy said this should make great redials! Well it did for only 3 nights after laying down thousands of feet of that junk! I am not sure if it was the rain or the soil content, but it oxide over just a couple of days. I kept having to fool with the tuning cap and then noticed this white stuff all over the wire. Not only was it hard to mess with, it was a complete disaster! However I was young and very little money to spend on the hobby back then. Lesson learned, don't mess with fence wire even if it is given to you!
So unless the chicken wire is cooper coated I wouldn't use it. Your back will thank me later! 😊

Thank you for hosting the meeting and giving tour of your amazing station!
Great visiting with everybody.
Question re: radials: what do think of using some sort of wire fencing such as chicken wire as a substitute for individual radials? Is there an equivalency of say a 3 foot swath of wire for certain number of radials.
There are several of us who would like to see the article about shunt feeding towers if you run across too. Thanks!
Attached is an old picture of an ADXA meeting
