I trust everyone got on and worked some gud DX this weekend in CQWW.
There was a ton of it on.
As a bit of further explanation on my comment below that I sent in a
hurry to alert everyone to a nice 10 meter opening, sometimes when I
make posts or send reports I receive comments or a response that says
"Well, sure with those BIG antennas you have!" and that is not always
the case. I do have a standard set of antennas I use for everyday DX'ing
but I also have "options" that I erect in various configuration in
addition to those for contests and those were not all out when we had
our meeting here in September. One of those options is to install a
small tribander, in this case an old Cushcraft A3, fixed to the
southeast to cover openings to South America on 20/15/10 during a DX
contest so I simply have to push a button to select it rather than to
keep cranking a rotor back and forth. This antenna is only around 50 ft
high and is what I was using during the 10 meter opening and my "No I'm
NOT" comment was that the larger antennas were not being used at the
time.
So, with a very small tribander at 50 ft during the contest on Saturday
afternoon I worked 24 DXCC countries on 10 and 13 Zones. Total Q's were
47. So if you were just starting out DX'ing you would have been 24% on
your way to a DXCC just using 10 meters this weekend, not to mention the
others you could have worked on 20 and 15. I thought I read somewhere
that propagation is dead, the sky had fallen and amateur radio is
DOOMED! As Lee Corso says every Saturday morning on College Football
Game Day "NOT SO FAST!"
Only have a small station or just starting out DX'ing, or know someone
who is? Come to the ADXA conference December and catch K5EJ's
presentation "DX'ing on a Budget".
The CQWW DX Contests are over for the season however we do have the ARRL
DX contests coming up so get ready and GET IN THERE!!!
