Yep Kathy and I was there at Hamvention. For me one day and Kathy both.
BTW, Kathy is VP of QRP ARCI, she is very involved with FDIM and the
banquet. So I went to Hamvention the first day and helped worked the ARCI
booth. I didn't move around much. The building we are in gets very warm as
the crowd comes in. Looks like the fans they had all the mud and animal dug
on have been repainted, but I still didn't see them turned on. Maybe other
buildings are cooler? Seems like the traffic congestion is fixed and we had
no problem getting in, unlike the first year for Xenia.
For the last two times I've been at the new location, I just wasn't able to
hang in there to do a lot of looking. However I did stop by the N3ZN,
Expert Amps (Bill, Elva, and Bob), Kathy bumped into Ray Novak on our way to
our booth. So we both got to say hi. I didn't get to see Bob Heil, but
Kathy did. We also got to hang out with Ed Hare from the ARRL Lab that is
always a joy. Well he is a riot to be around!
Like CTU and others, FDIM has become an extended family of sorts. We use to
have a lot of guys stay with us while attending CTU and then do the QRP
evening activities plus the banquet with us. However since the Hamfest has
moved closer to our motel, it has put pressure on rooms for the QRP
gathering. Sadly my other friends that are big time Contesters and DXers I
now miss them in the evenings because of this.
So that is why we do other events, when we are in Dayton the pressure is on
to help and work for the group. In other words give back to the hobby we
love.
I had a great time overall, but bummed out a little bit on my physical
performance or lack thereof.
I would love to go over to Friedrichshafen and it is on the bucket list, but
not sure I can handle all the lay overs. My advice to folks thinking they
will get to do "things" when they retire is to go ahead and do it NOW, while
you can.
Sorry we missed you and Kim. We would have loved to see you both!! 73 de

Subject: [ADXA] Where Have I Been?
Greetings to all,
I've been absent here for several weeks. I noted a couple of months ago once
spring arrives and I take down my low band RX antennas for the summer after
the 160 meter season has ended I fall in to a different routine. Doesn't
mean I forget radio!! I have at least one on in the shack all the time when
I'm home. Regardless, a number of other activities have occurred and of
course the Dayton Hamvention. It was good to see ADXA members W5VY, WB5BHS,
W5SJ, K5UZ and K5UR there. I heard a rumor that W5JAY may have been in there
area "QRP'ing" although I didn't see him. There may have been others.
I don't spend a great deal of time actually at Hamvention. I mainly go for a
number of the activities that occur not specifically part of Hamvention.
These include Contest University, the ARRL Donor's Reception, Top Band
Dinner and to visit with some long time radio buddies. Kim and I had a great
time as usual and I plan to go back next year. For several year's I always
claimed "this year was my last"
primarily because I literally hated Hara Arena in its run down dilapidated
condition that the owners refused to address. Well, time took care of that
and now after three years at Hamvention's new home, the Green County
Fairgrounds in Xenia, I have become accustom to the location and routine and
like the facilities much better than the old dump that apparently God got
tired of looking at as well!
So, today is a day I dedicated to catching up on email and looking forward
to the next few weeks. I have finally made progress on the new tower
replacement I tried to start last fall and got severely delayed by all the
rain we've had the past 7 months. N5QS and I finished erecting the tower a
few weeks ago and over this past weekend N5QS, N5QT and I got it's first
antenna up.
PLEASE REMEMBER OUR 2nd QUARTERLY MEETING IN HOT SPRINGS!!!!!!
Even through it is late spring heading in to summer there IS quite a bit of
DX on the air. If you subscribe to Bernie, W3UR's newsletters or keep an eye
on DX World you know what is out there. Some very nice DX that you need.
Please keep sending your updates to Pat W5VY. It is very encouraging to see
everyone moving up the ladder!
