Good email Jay.
(1) It is the DXpedition’s money, mainly, less donations pre trip, so they have the right to do it their way. I always tell people, if you don’t like it, then spend your own money and go on your own DXpedition, maybe even the same place one is bitching about.
(2) I want to say one thing more about the Leaderboard links. I usually only look once or twice to see some of my friends like K5RK in Texas and watch him blow out the east and west coast, as Joel mentioned. I know he has fantastic antennas and does FT8, but I enjoy the ladders as they relate to Zone 4 and NA and lets me know where my weenie station sits, usually in top 100 but WAY down the list. No big deal. MY POINT is that me watching the boards now, I can see more of our ADXA brothers get on the Top 100 list and then CLIMB up slowly. THAT is what I like, more ADXA members at least trying to chase harder, as Joel keeps mentioning. The inclusion in the top 100 shows me how much better we are as a DX club than perhaps just a short time ago. THAT is why it hurt me that our ADXA members were excluded from the ARRL Member ladder though CLEARLY in the top 20 or so on the other lists. Hey, no big deal. The main thing is our inclusion in the best of Zone 4 and, if lucky, in the top 100. I will still take a gander at those boards. That is PART of my hobby and makes me CHASE harder and maybe crawl from #96 up to #71 based on lucking up on one more band/mode with someone.
(3) A fact is that other DX clubs monitor those ladders to perhaps stimulate them to beat out a friend or just a big time DXer on the opposite NA coast. Don’t think they don’t recognize that there is now another entity to look at, the ADXA. I continue to browse ClubLog to look at Prop reports for specifics of times and bands for AR and W5 land. Part of my chasing habits, knowing when I can eat breakfast or not to eat supper til 9PM…
73 all and TU again Jay.. good thought process but not enough for me to undertake a new digital mode to go with my RTTY. I will just stay at the bottom or not on the ladder at all. I know my fatigue limits. Age 77 came too fast for me, but I’ve had great ham memories for 62 years!

Subject: Re: [ADXA] Starting today, only chasing needed B/M
Hi San,
I would let the DXexpedition set the terms. Like in the 7P8 case, they say come and get us! Other expeditions will say do not work us unless you need us for a new Band/Mode country or for ATNO. I normally just like to fill in new band modes, but once is a while I like to see what I can do in the Weenier mode against the big guns. As K5UR would say against their huge antenna systems. That is a hoot for sure to measure yourself against them when they are in the race! I know you are like Joel and never met a pileup you didn’t like, so I say go for it. The other day when I worked the 7P8 on 40m I was looking at the map and there I was the only station in mid USA that worked them during that time period. The other USA station was on the east coast. That sure pumped me up and during that whole time they faded out and making me sweat a little bit. I know for a fact my 40m cloud warmer antenna sucks compared to the beams on that band.
Now back to the leader board, etc. I also don’t care about the national level, but if I see a friend or other ADXA members chasing DX (we all look and compare right!), many times I will get into the chase just because of the comradery of my friends! That is probably the only thing that kept and made me into a DXer is the social aspect and mentoring. I need mentoring and I do my best to help others.
Sorry I got off the subject, but have thought about it for a few days now. In summary I would let the DXexpeditions set the terms. Many times if I am working one all the bands I including the ones I didn’t really need, I will add more to the QRSS donation for each contact. So really they benefit from all my contacts even if I only needed them on one band or mode
Now with FT8 there is no reason for any Weenier to really complain. Now if there was a DXer near you and they mention you were interfering, that is a great way to help them and work something about between you. I think that is part of the Amateur code never lessen the hobby for others! But they need to at least let you know it. If a DXexpedition says only work us if you need us for a ATNO or for Band/Mode, they I will abide by those rules set by them. So one really needs to read the web pages first, something I need to tighten up on myself.
