OK, now I have to jump in.?? My father owned a string of radio stations
but he would never allow any of his sons to work for him.?? I got my
First-Class Radio Telephone License in 1966, junior in high school.?? I
got a job at WTLN in Apopka, Florida.?? They only hired me because they
had a directional array and needed my ticket.?? No one in Orlando would
hire me because my father was a cut-throat competitor. WLOF/WLOQ.?? I
soon moved on to an Orlando station, still in high school where the
owner didn't seem to dislike my father.?? It was the number one country
station in town, WABR, 1440, "Top Gun Radio."?? I worked 6p-12m, Saturday
and Sunday.?? I had a big head. I also got a job during the day, Sunday,
as the booth announcer for WFTV-TV, channel 9, Orlando.?? I had to leave
that job to attend OCS at Pensacola NAS in 1969.?? After I finished up
with that, I went back to school at the University of Florida, still in
the Navy.?? I got a job at WDVH doing news.?? Also got picked up by the
Tampa Tribune as the reporter for their North Florida Bureau. Bigger
head.?? In the meantime, failed a flight physical and was honorably
discharged from the Navy.?? Sterling career in Journalism ahead of me,
right??? Nope, running out of money, got a job with Alachua County
Sheriff's Department in Gainesville.?? Best job I ever had.?? Stayed their
until 1976 when Secret Service hired me. 25 years there.?? Retired as
Agent In Charge of Memphis FO.?? Second career with US Attorney's Office
in Memphis.?? Two pensions!?? I was incredibly blessed.?? My heart is
always with broadcasting.?? That is where I became interested in what got
me here.
I did manage to pick up a commercial pilot's license SEL.?? The only
thing I'm able to fly now is my neighbor's 1948 Luscombe which he
restored in my carport in Melrose, Florida.?? It has a conventional gear
which is tough on a paved runway.?? I was used to J3 (Piper Cub) on a
grass field.
This is a great group.?? Best I have ever been associated with.
Kind regards,
Steve, N4JQQ
Oreat history George.. Sure brings back memories for me too, the effort,
taking General Class exam in Little Rock driving over and back as a 14
year old kid since Stuttgart was too close to take a Conditional Class
exam from my mentor, W5FUW.
