Do NOT use bare wire if you are laying it on the ground, otherwise you
will have a ground wire, not a BOG. If you are going to place it a few
inches above the ground bare wire will be OK, as long as its not
grounded anywhere along the wire's path.

Bare wire is fine for a Beverage, just not a Beverage on GROUND!

Stop when I get close to the road - probably <>150 feet. Connect the terminating resistor and run two bare radials at the far end pinned to the ground and include a few one foot ground rods or whatever is guaranteed to not pierce any underground utilities. Pour a few gallons of water on the "ground" system. Then try it. The far end will basically be underneath a power line but the line noise is quiet as of now.

I'm determined to do better in 2020 at the new location where we have shelter but not as much property. During the night, the SSB, GOTA, and digital stations will mostly be on 40 meters, so I'll need to concentrate on 80. I hate listening to summer static all night so I'd like to use a receive antenna.

The problem is that there are underground utilities and numerous high pressure gas lines in the area, and I don't really want to get the One Call folks involved. So - no ground rods available except the one at the AC service entrance right next to the building.
