We will have full information and registration ready to go on our
website this week for our upcoming annual meeting and seminar.
A great event is planned and I hope you will attend to hear several
presentations including two from our special guest Frank Dononvan,
W3LPL. ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR will also attend!
Since we are a DX club you may wonder why we have a world renowned
contester as our special guest this year. Good question with a great
answer!
One of our goals over the past three years has been to provide mentoring
to our membership in order to improve your technical knowledge, improve
your station and operator efficiency and encourage you to try new
challenging things. Just to be blunt, we are big talkers about how we
have forgotten the art of Elmer'ing but then we sit on our ass and do
absolutely nothing about it other than to complain!
If you want to be a successful DX'er, regardless of the level or the
size of your station, you need to understand many things that include
antennas and propagation, just to name a few. We have access to a number
of highly successful radio amateurs across the country who are subject
matter experts in our area of interest, regardless of their specific
interest. If you believe there is nothing for you to learn and these
seminars are of no interest to you then write an article for our
newsletter or present a seminar at an upcoming meeting on a technical
topic you have mastered.
At our quarterly meetings over the past three years we have had
presentations about simple antennas for DX'ing, how to abate noise in
your station, lightning protection for your station and many others.
Last year at our annual meeting we were able to have Carl, K9LA in
attendance to present two seminars on propagation. This year Frank,
W3LPL will present two seminars on techniques to improve your DX'ing
experience during low sunspot times....VERY important for the next few
years! Frank will present on propagation and receive antennas, some that
are applicable to small city lots.
Seeing photos of bikini clad ladies on a remote beach, hams struggling
to erect antennas on a remote ice cap in sub zero blizzard conditions
surrounded by penguins or in an African jungle in 120 degree heat with
malaria carrying mosquitoes and wild animals is important for us to
understand the personal sacrifice required to give us the pleasure of a
new one while we are sitting in our comfortable shack. Unless we also
understand the technical requirements to assemble our own station
successfully we will never experience the thrill of working these folks.
We will always focus on DX.....that is our game and our purpose and we
will always tap the folks with unique experience to help us achieve our
goal.
