Good points ....
I have my “list” of needed countries on a large sheet in front of my PC and headed by needed countries on 160/80/30/18/12, mainly the WARC bands… On 40/21 and 28mc I do a quick flip to a file on my desktop to view those bands. Just the way I have done it since the late 70s..
Many ways to keep one’s records. Once I get to 300 worked, I slow down because 300 on each band is my general goal and nothing else to prove to myself. During the low sunspot cycles, it is easier to keep track of things…sorta. Less-rare and semi-rare entities seldom get on 24 and 28mc due to low QSO per day totals on those bands. The more QSOs the more post trip donations usually.
DXing is fun if one knows his limits. You usually don’t listen for Martti on A5 in Bhutan if prop charts say ‘no way and not open’ on the band he is on. Bigger antennas have a better propagation map and a better chance under marginal conditions. On each sorta rare DXpedition I put a sheet in front of me with bands and TIMES that are the best to listen. Then I have columns for RTTY/CW/SSB where I put a check when I work that mode. That way a quick look is all one needs to compare to the DX Summit spots or where you may have your receiver set for that real rare one that is “in and then gone” in a 5-15 minute window. That is a real challenge, as Joel has outlined on a few occasions. QSB factors in too..
   Good comments EJ..

Great commentary on DXing.

If you want to work a lot of DX then  follow the advice of Woody Allen: “80% of life is showing up”.  I’ll paraphrase that to “80% of working DX is turning on your radio and listening”.
Regarding goals: I follow a tip that Rick UR told me long time ago.  Make a list of stations you need and focus on working them.  My totals went way up after I started making a needs list and hunting particular stations

Good DX
