On May 13 I made a trip down to the Socorro, NM, area. It wasn't a radio
trip although I did activate the El Camino Real Historic Trail (TR17) for a
few contacts. One contact: N5RN! The purpose of the trip was to see Fort
Craig and the Mineral Museum at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and
Mineral Resources at the New Mexico Tech campus in Socorro. Anyway, some of
you might enjoy the story and pictures.
Fort Craig (for you history buffs) was activated in 1854 and closed in 1885.
It's primary purpose was to protect travelers on the El Camino Real trail.
But it's main claim to fame was it's role in the Civil War Battle of
Valverde - one of the two Civil War battles in New Mexico. After the war,
it was involved in the Indian Wars.
It's about 4 miles east of Interstate 25 and really out in the boondocks.
>From there I travelled about 11 more miles south to the Visitor's Center
for the El Camino Real (the Royal Road to the Interior). This was the main
north-south artery for commerce with Mexico until the late 1800's.
Established in 1598, the road stretched 1600 miles from Veracruz, Mexico,
to the pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh north of Santa Fe. The Visitor's Center is 3
miles east of I-25. It's one of those places easily bypassed unless you
know about it.
The Mineral Museum was a real surprise and definitely worth the visit.
Amazing specimens - primarily from the Southwest - but also many from
around the world. 73 Rick AI5P
