Today, March 11th, I travelled over to Grants, NM, to visit a new park. El
Malpais means "the badlands" in Spanish. In satellite photos of New Mexico,
lava flows blanketing much of El Malpais National Monument and National
Conservation Areas look like a huge lake southwest of Grants. The imagery
shows only dominant landscape features - lava flows, mountain ranges, mesas
- that mask mysteries and wonders. Its volcanic features include cinder
cones, a lava tube cave system extending at least 17 miles, and fragile ice
caves. The area offers diverse natural environments and tantalizing
evidence of American Indian and European history. Radio conditions were
very poor in the morning on 20 meters - better on 17 meters in the
afternoon. A total of 268 contacts made it into the log.
Congrats to those that made it!
