Here's the answer to the Who spend part of their childhood at Fort Selden,
New Mexico:
Douglas MacArthur - about 3 years in the 1880's when his father, Arthur
MacArthur was the commander. Of course, he later became a 5-star general in
WWII.
Where was he born - Actually, he was born in my home state of Arkansas.
That's right, at Arsenal Barracks in Little Rock on Jan 16, 1880.
Don't think he ever claimed to be from Arkansas - that would be Wisconsin I
suspect.
His father was an 18 year old Lieutenant in the 24th Wisconsin Volunteer
Infantry Regiment when he was awarded the Medal of Honor during the Battle
of Missionary Ridge in Tennessee in Nov, 1863.
Interesting bit of trivia - Douglas MacArthur was awarded the Medal of
Honor for his actions in the Philippines early in WWII. So father and son
were the first (and only I think) soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
