[ADXA] Historical day - Somewhat related to amateur radio and the NPOTA Program!

Today (April 2) I checked off one of my bucket list items - a visit to
Trinity
Site on White Sands Missile Range. It's only open to the public two days a
year. I went on a bus tour through the Nuclear Museum in Albuquerque.
For those that don't recognize the name - here's the background:

[image: Photo: Trinity Test, July 16, 1945]Trinity Site is where the first
atomic bomb was tested at 5:29:45 a.m. Mountain War Time on July 16, 1945.
The 19-kiloton explosion not only led to a quick end to the war in the
Pacific but also ushered the world into the atomic age. All life on Earth
has been touched by the event which took place here.

The 51,500-acre area was declared a national historic landmark in 1975. The
landmark includes base camp, where the scientists and support group lived,
ground zero, where the bomb was placed for the explosion, and the McDonald
ranch house, where the plutonium core to the bomb was assembled. Visitors
to a Trinity Site Open House see ground zero and the McDonald ranch house.
In addition, one of the old instrumentation bunkers is visible beside the
road just west of ground zero.

I was surprised to see that it's a National Historic Landmark. It's not
listed

on the National Park Service list of sites in New Mexico but it was listed

on the Handout I got there as well as as on google under Trinity Site
National Park.... curious! Park rangers were there from White Sands
National Monument and you could get a stamp similar to NPS stamps for other
sites.

I remember from years ago reading about about certain frequency
restrictions around White Sands Missile Range. I suspect with the normal
security there as well as the very limited access, getting permission to
operate HF radio here would be quite challenging!

Anyway, the day was quite interesting with the locations visited and the

commentary provided by the Museum docents. I would guess several

thousand folks visited this very historic site today. The pictures will give

you some ideas of the area. Enjoy..... Rick AI5P
